Whole word readers

My 8 yo is a whole word reader, and is reading well for her age, but is reluctant to read "thicker" books, with smaller letters and "more text."

She loves to read, but won't pick up books that might look more challenging. She reads well out-loud, though sometimes hurries through words, and it is obvious it is an effort for her. When she was 4-5 she spent a lot of time on starfall.com, so I'm sure she learned some phonics this way, but we've never done any lessons (we are unschoolers.)

Since I didn't grow up with English and only learned it as a second language, I'm not exactly sure whether she needs some kind of extra instruction at this stage, or her reading will develop naturally. What are your experiences? Thanks!

I don't see any red flags in what you're describing. I can remember my kids picking out books based on how large the print was or how much white space there was on the page. It can be overwhelming to a new reader to see all that tiny print!

What kinds of books is she reading now? Do you have any concern about her eyesight? (Does she squint? Hold the book very close or far away? Close one eye? etc. ) If she continues to shy away from smaller print books after a while, I think I'd take her for an eye exam, (most people in my family wear glasses so it would be on my mind) but really, it seems quite normal to me for a new reader to be choosing larger print and shorter books.
