What supplements do your children take and why?

We have four children (9, 7, 5 & 3), who, up until this year didn't take any vitamins or supplements beyond the gummy bear vitamins that we gave them.

The younger two boys were having some dental issues, so I started them all on liquid Calcium/Magnesium from the health food store. I'm hoping that it helps with the dental stuff.

I also got Children's DHA because I read in a couple of places that DHA can help some children with speech issues (which my 5yo has).

There are so many different supplements out there. So, for those of you who give your kids vitamins and supplements, I'm wondering what you use, how much any why?

Hello

I give my kids several supplements, although most I do no use all of the time.
We consistently do barley greens (powdered barley grass that we mix with water and stevia) to stay alkalized. I make sure the kids get it every day. It is full of enzymes and really good nutrition.
Probiotics we keep on hand along with digestive enzymes. As far as vitamin supplements we do D and Zinc and C, but not every day. I have other herbs on hand that I use when and if they are sick. We rely alot on diet, and we use a lot of seeds to supplement some good nutrition.

My kids take fish oil year-round, and Vit. D in the winter. I don't give them anything else-- their diet is really good to begin with, and I just don't feel like they need more. I give the D because they get limited sunlight in the winter, and our milk is not fortified with D. I give the fish oil because we don't have the budget to buy the amount of fish that I believe would give them a healthy balance of fatty acids. I don't give cod liver oil largely because they refuse it. I could get it in a form that they would accept-- those gummies, for instance-- but they're so expensive.

We don't do any supplements in the summer because they get loads of sun, fresh fruits, and fresh veggies. In the other months of the year, they take a food-based multivitamin, probiotics, and vitamin d. We tried doing the fish oil thing, but they don't really like it, so I do a lot of seeds and baking with grains/seeds that have high omega 3 contents.

Just FYI the omega's in seeds is totally different then that of fish. They actually have way more omega 6... children also have a hard time converting any plant based omega 3 into DHA.

So, I'm curious. . .you give them both fish oil and vitamin D? I thought we gave fish oil for the vitamin D?

My kids eat yogurt with Garden of Life probiotic powder every morning. DS takes New Chapter multi vitamin packets (when we think about it). DS takes Nordic Naturals fish oil and DD takes cod liver oil in the winter (I can't get DS to take the cod liver oil). DD was drinking a green drink every morning until we moved and now we're out so I need to order some more.

Our fish oil is molecullarly distilled, and most of the naturally occurring D is removed from it. It's natural cod liver oil that contains D.

I don't give them any supplements really, though a few times a week DS1 has 'milk w stuff' - which is about 8+oz of raw milk w/ 1 scoop of Juice Plus Complete - lots of proteine and various vitaimins/minerals. Mostly he gets it if I feel like he hasn't eaten very well and is crank because of it. Its sweet, chocolaty and he sucks it down like nothin. Usually.

During the winter I will be giving my DS vitamin D drops (he is 1 year old) since we will not get much sunlight. I have the brand picked out but forgot the name, I found it at the local natural foods store.

Hallelujah Acres (www.hacres.com). They have an 8.5oz container that works well because we go through a lot! Just Barley is another good brand.

My DD takes Vitamin D and Omega's, and sometimes a multivitamin. She loves Vitamin C so sometimes she has that too. We used probiotics too, but not all the time. She loves green drinks, but they are expensive so I think I'll look into the barley greens mentioned here.

I give them cod liver oil in their smoothie about once or twice a week and maybe once in awhile I will add a tsp of brewyer's yeast in their oatmeal. But I don't give them supplements everyday.

I never used to use any, but recently I've been giving vitamin D (Carlson's drops) and powdered probiotics (Udo's Choice Infant).
