I am not on FB. DH is adamant that FB is too much of security risk for our home network, so that's a no go here. I really wish I was on FB, but, he's the computer guy, so I've got no say (it would be like him arguing with me about breastfeeding ).

rm~Wow, what a great story! And that's awesome how well your DH reacted!

nemesis~I totally understand that feeling. Last winter when I was training for my marathon, I was in such great shape and started running with some friends with relatively new babies. When we started, I was a lot faster. Well, they all dropped sub-2 hr half-marathons last spring without even really trying that hard, whereas I DID try hard and didn't get anywhere close to it. I just keep trying to tell myself c'est la vie, it's fine, but it kinda stinks. I really wish I could be one of those people that running comes naturally to, but I'm not. I have to work hard at it, and I'm never going to be super fast, and that's just the way it is. Bah.

Dosage calc test seemed pretty easy, but I guess we'll find out when we get the results. Which who knows when it will be since they have to hand grade all 111 of them. I literally went over the questions and checked my math three times, so I can't really imagine missing anything, but you never know.

Got a good quick run in after class with the woman who chased me down a few weeks ago. I think she'll make an excellent RP. And then a teeny bit of studying before picking up DS, rushing home for a shower, and then heading to meet my parents at their hotel. They've been on this massive driving trip for about 3 weeks or so now, starting in Ohio, driving across the northern part of the US (Minnesota, ND, Glacier NP, into Idaho, over to Crater Lake, down through CA and the redwood forests to Yosemite, to visit my stepniece and her family in Vegas, then to Sedona, and finally to Albuquerque for the balloon festival, phew!). I convinced them to drive up here a day early so they can watch DS for me in the morning. We had dinner ( for nice restaurant meals that I don't have to pay for!) tonight, and then I think we'll go for a drive to check out the fall colors tomorrow afternoon. They haven't decided exactly how long they're going to stay, but the longer I can convince them to hang around (and pay for stuff like meals ), the better!

Ok, off to study pharm. Having serious motivational issues directly related to last week's awesome test performance on very little studying.

i just looked up the date for this a few days ago! i really wish it would coordinate with spring break so i could bring the kids to visit their cousins..but alas, it's a few weeks before. i would still like to try and make it out, though. does it sell out usually?

oh yeah, if you're running it in under an hour, we won't be running it together

kerc--good luck with your soda diet. It would be cool to be able to put that money aside, at least!

1jooj--Sorry about your chick, and hope you get a great run in tomorrow.

Nemesis-- You'll get there too, but it's definitely hard to not be there yet.

tjsmama--study! You have a reputation to live up to.

It's been a mostly ok day here. I caught the bus today, so it was nice to have some time to knit. Unfortunately, we forgot to send DD's library book back today, so she couldn't get another book from the school library. Apparently they don't even let them look around; they have to go to the library but then just sit on the rug. And she loves school library days.

She was understandably upset, and I was upset myself for forgetting it, upset at DH for leaving all this to me, and then also upset with myself for not effectively teaching her that it's her responsibility to put her library book in her backpack rather than waiting for me to do it. I've been terrified of forgetting her library books for the last couple of weeks and even put it in my planner, but I forgot to do it this week.

A couple of people were sitting on campus this evening with a cardboard sign that said "free hugs." I nearly went over for one.

Real ~ I'll give you a free . I've done that with the library book a handful of times too and it always makes me feel really guilty or inadequate or something. Not sure why, because, we're not perfect .

tjsmama ~ have fun with your parents and I hope you got that 100% you need on your dosage test.

bec ~ congratulations on your new puppy! He sounds absolutely perfect and honestly, there is NOTHING cuter than a lab pup. If your DH doesn't mind, you could probably e-mail one of us a pic and have us post it for you on FB. Just an idea.

RM ~ you are SMOKIN' those runs these days! I am so jealous/envious ! Nice work. Your DH's response to the ex showing up is admirable.

kerc ~ good for you on giving up the Diet Coke. I'm down to 1 a day, but I just can't seem to kick it totally.

I ran Week 6, Day 1 of C25K yesterday. The run itself felt good, but I was totally numb from my left hip to the bottom of my left foot for the rest of the afternoon . When will this $%^& injury end????? The fact that I have hip involvement now leads me to believe that this may be more of a lumbar spine issue than a knee issue though. Unfortunately, DH's new insurance doesn't start until Nov. 1, so any further testing will have to wait a month. I don't want to stop running though, especially since I have a 5K on October 23. I'll just take it easy.

Real, I forget library books too. In fact, I need to check in with both kids on their situations and make sure we're in good standing.

Nemesis, I have similar situations. I got my sister running, and she just did a sub-2-hour half, and she's got her body fat down...well, lower than I'd even like, really, and and and. Me? Back to intervals and struggling with the same 20 pounds as always.

JayGee, I am for your injury already. Something's got to give already.

Some friends dumped a pile of junk food on us this weekend, and I didn't have the heart to just toss it all. So I'm staring down pretzels and twixes, plus the cookies dd and I made. Cookies need to go to the freezer. Pretzels to the chickens. Twixes to the trash.

And my house has once again devolved out of a sheer lack of hours in a day. Sure, I could be cleaning now...but I'm tired. I'm just going to drink this coffee and get on with it.

Plan is definitely to run, do some other working out, and whirlpool if I have time. My hands are really hurting (colder weather? too much heavy lifting?) and can use the heat. Then work, and maybe come home early and get the house cleaned up before the kids come home, I don't have to be such a downer about it with them. If weather's good, I'd like to take them to run/walk on the trail.

I have an offer for childcare through the weekend and I'd like to take it up, but one of my children has consistent conflict with one of the friend's children. Well, that's understated. Even I have consistent conflict with this child...and I just don't know if it's fair to place them in a situation like that for 2 nights, just so I can get some down time to clean the house and rest. Ugh.

That's a great idea! I will definitely do that over the weekend! He just doesn't want me playing Farmville or something, and then all of our computers are compromised and our identity stolen. When I at him, my email is peppered the next day of news reports of exactly this thing happening all over FB. Or about the burglaries that are occurring because thieves are watching FB status's. I really would about it for real, but he really does know his stuff with internet/network security. It pays for our house, and puts food on our table, so I need to take him seriously.

Real - I get myself all worked up over that sort of thing too. It's kind of harsh to not even let a kid look around at the books.

Inspiring better runners - I'm sure DH is going to be a much faster runner than me when he gets going. I try really, really hard to not be threatened by it. Especially because he isn't there yet. It's hard, and then I feel guilty for hating that he's going to be faster! I have spoken to my RP about this. She would be very fast if she didn't have asthma/injuries/health issues. I think the thing that is hard is when people are naturally very fast, but don't realize that others have to work really hard, just to get minimal results! We have fought and fought and fought, and are pleased with sub-10 minute miles. Then, someone comes along and says, "Yeah, I just thought I would try this 5k. Didn't do very well. Finished in 24:something. I don't like running very much."

JayGee - Have you tried a chiropracter, or accupuncture? I am thinking that the wonders of western medicine have failed you, and think it's time to give some alternative methods a try.

Gaye - I'm still keeping my fingers crossed on your test, but I'm sure you did great!

Lots to post about, not much time (must get dressed and get moving).

real: library books -- yes, totally painful. Especially since we have library once every 8 school days. . Never on the same day of the week.....Our strategy is to read the book and send it back early if we're done. My dd's teachers have a strategy in place to handle books that come back not during library time. If they didn't, honestly I would just leave it in the backpack and it would travel to/from school daily.

Jo: I wish I could come hang out with you. I've been thinking about how it might have been had you gone to Europe and then had the new travel alert come out over there -- would you be scared to have both parents away from the kids, etc.

Soda in our vending machine is 1.50. Which alone should be a no-brainer. But I bought a 12 pack and then once that ran out, I was desperate and spent my run around cash on soda. Stupid way to spend money. Last night I opened a coke and spilled out about 90% of it after taking a few sips.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch
dh and I are debating if we can swing $$ a woodburning fireplace insert for heat this winter. We need a new roof and the question is should we do it or not. Roof guy is coming to give us a second estimate in about an hour. I really want the woodstove. I wish I could do the roof next summer.
kerc- I would want the wood stove, too. I hope the roof is affordable or can wait.

Jo, tjsmama, thanks.

I think I am just feeling overhwelmed this week because I've gotten behind on a few things. I have a full day planned for today, and I hope it goes well.
Real - That is a drag that they don't let the kid even look around. (How's this for irony? A message just popped up from my own library telling me that I have a pile of overdue books!)

Jo - Sorry about your chick. How often do you add to your flock? Do you generally hatch your own or buy new? I'm not very happy with the way our old flock and our new flock have integrated. We haven't had any killing but there is the issue of now 10 chickens roosting in the pine tree and not in the spanking new coop. Ah chickens.
It's a good thing I'm not closer, I'd drop in and rifle through your trash for those twixes. Can you not use them for Halloween?

RM - Too bad you probably can't tell your dh that all the dingos liked his cool as a cucumber response to exbf

Nemesis - I hear you. My own little inspiree recently finished his first 70.3 in 5:14. Good for him right?

Kerc - for kicking the dc addiction. I waded into the danger zone with that one summer as a teenager. Luckily at the end of the summer I moved back in with my parents and soda just wasn't on the radar as something they'd buy so my source dried up.

Well, I'm still coughing up nasty yellow chunks but I'm going to go out and try a trail anyway. It's sunny, the house is relatively clean and I'm freaked out about that race.
Nemesis - I totally know that feeling. Bleh. Its normal and sucks

Jaygee - !!! You just reminded me: I was reading all around google to learn more about my injuries when I stumbled on something that sounded so much like your issues, but at that time you were starting to run again w/out pain and I thought you were in the clear so I didnt link it. It was a discussion forum wherein several PT's gave their opinions on this guy's problem that he couldnt solve. One PT had the idea that it was lumbar/spine related and offered this maneuver that would resolve it. The PT sounded very knowledgeable and what he/she described sounded so much like your stuff. I dont know if I could possibly find it again, but I'll try.... I wont be able to get to it until later today or tonight ....

Tjsmama - Yes, the balloons. I love the balloon fiesta b/c there are hundreds of ballons in the sky when I drive the kids to school, and it always happens on dd1's bday Last Friday a balloon landed in the schoolyard at ds' school (they all fly in the early a.m. due to air currents, so it landed and was removed as the kids were arriving to their classes)

Real - I struggle with where my responsibility ends and dd1's begins. I think your dd1 is younger though, but my dd1 has forgotten homework that I remember and notice that she is forgetting b/c I want her to face the consequences - but it hurrrttts.

Ok, am I crazy? Im seriously thinking of going to meet her but its over an hour away Do we really want a dog right now? Eeek
post #52 of 554
Sparkle, he's adorable! I'm not a huge fan of basset hounds, but only because I wanted a running partner in my dog. But I love visiting with the ones I meet at the dog park! They are so fun to play with.

Ok, dingos. Offline I go. I've wasted my morning by playing on the internet and periodically wandering around my house, unmotivated to clean any of the filth that is piling up. DH comes home for lunch in 20 minutes, and we have a whole day's worth of school work to finish before an afternoon date with some friends.

Blech. I hate when I procrastinate so much.
Blah. I could swear that the breed was wrong, but I called and they said that her mom is a bassett. No, we do not want a bassett. Any dog we have needs long legs

sparkle ~ if you can find the discussion, I'd really appreciate it. I am totally grasping at straws now.

bec ~ I'm in the middle of getting accupuncture and have been going to the chiro for years. I've also tried homeopathy and vitamin B12.

I had a good Power Pump class this morning. The instructor even complemented me on my "perfect" pushups !
jaygee - Im trying to find it but cant (googling every topic I might have been and looking through...). But it sounds like it could very well be your sciatic nerve getting pinched as it goes through your lower back (I think I remember them talking about C4, C5?). The nerve goes down the outside of your leg to your knee and down along the outside of your calf. I imagine you got this looked at. Darn... Ill keep looking. The idea had something to do with - ok, bear with me - you have the discs, and they are surrounded by something else; some kind of casing (bone? I dont remember ... dh told me about it after I read that forum so when he gets back in a few days I can be more clear). The PT was saying something about the relationship between the casing and the discs - how their positions can get screwy and cause nerve problems. Also, he/she said something about the correspondence between different parts of your spine and different parts of your leg (like ... and Im making this up .... C5 is the back of your knee, etc). So by adjusting your spine.... but if you are seeing a chiro, and surely the other MD's thought of all this. It just sounds like its got to be your sciatic nerve Ill keep looking...

Hey guys, I'm behind already! I was in a fender bender yesterday. I was in the right of way but I feel so bad for the kid who pulled out in front of me. He thought I was going to turn because my blinker was on and he was understandably confused because I was slowing down, but there were so many little driveways to turn in to and I needed to turn into the next one. Anyway, it could've happened to anyone. And if you have a stop sign you always have to yield the right away even if the other car's blinker was on. I know insurance will cover it but I just felt so sad for the kid. I don't know why. I think it's AF's fault that I started crying. So today I'm in a rental only crossing my fingers his insurance will cover it. The kids act like it's Christmas or something being in a new car.

Bec, thanks for that advice. That's just the kind of thing I was wondering about. I'm also going to try some sports cream to massage into the area.

Kerc, I hate diet cokes! I mean, I love them and they're so bad for me, so really I hate them. It's a messy love-hate affair. Good luck! I find that if I really crave one, sometimes water with a lemon squeezed into it really, really helps.

I'm really behind, but I'm posting this for now before I'm kicked out of this little coffee shop!

Can I just say how good it feels to just hang out at the Dingo Cafe? I read your posts and feel so connected and warm and fuzzy. There is so much love and concern and help in this community that, regardless of how the world around us may seem to fall apart, it feels grounding and real and warm and hopeful. Just wanted to say how much I love your stories, your jokes, your shared experiences and support and advice and safe non-judgmental place you make it!! I can't respond from where I live all the time, but I constantly wish I could just click Like or something similar so you'll know your comments have been read and are appreciated.

Plady, I think we hatched enough this year to not have to buy replacements. We'll see what happens next summer. I bought 25 layers last fall. Lots of our hens like to go broody, and the best moms are really good at integrating their clutches into the flock when it's time. But we always have the backup plan of the coop if we need it, and a lot of room in the barn and yards for roaming. Even the roos don't fight.

Lofty, sorry about the accident. I had a bump with a teen once. It was a non-event, but I did throw my blinkers on and have a talk with him about black ice and speed before letting him go. Anyway, love you and always happy to see you.

My workout was weird this AM. Everything was full--TMs, bikes, track, ellipticals, so I started with some weights, then hit a bike for 15 minutes of hills, then some track running, then crunches. Then went to work for a meeting, and then did about 45min yoga with my little sister. Glad to have gotten some exercise, anyway.

St - I'll see your petfinder find with my petfinder find. I met her this morning and she seems sweet. Someone is coming to meet her from off-island tomorrow but if they don't take her home we'll bring her by to meet chickens and see how she behaves. The reviews for her breed with chickens aren't encouraging but she was really mellow with a cat so we shall see.
ooooh, plady, very cute. But a terrier w/ chickens
