What happens when the non custodial parent moves away?

My ex has our 7 month old son about 25% of the time. He is considering moving about 500 miles away to northern California. We currently live in a suburb of San Diego. How does it work in terms of visitation when the ncp of a breastfed infant moves away?

I imagine it would depend on your particular agreement, but I think the fairest thing to do is to have the parent who moved away come visit. The traveling expenses and time should be their responsibility. I guess where you have the visitation would depend on your relationship. If you're comfortable with him at your place, great; if not, you would need to come up with something else.

We had our custody agreement have specific provisions on what happens if he moves more than 100 miles away. The youngest is weaned, so we don't have that issue, but try to get every contingency you can think of in writing in the custody agreement. Our agreement is he only gets them one weekend a month, but extra time in the summer. If he moves out of the predefined area the kids are restricted to, the restriction is lifted and he has to provide 100% of the transportation. I imagine there isn't much he can do with breastfeeding. Do you have a legal custody agreement or do you just work this out amongst yourselves?

We do have a custody agreement that we worked out in mediation. If he moves, we'll have to go back to court and change the agreement. I spoke with my lawyer briefly about this and he said that I can ask for sole physical custody if he does move.
