When to See the Ped

How long after birth did you wait to see the Ped? Was your Ped knowledgable that you were planning a UC? Any problem with their responses to your UC?

I've always discussed it with my dr (family, ped, whatever) and explained that we were having a HB and that I preferred to bring the baby in the 1st business day after birth for the PKU and a checkup (mainly to get the chart going, help catch anything that may not show up immediately, that kind of thing since we delay vax). I've never had a doc balk, even in an area of GA where HB is seen as the extreme and practitioners can be prosecuted. I haven't ever told one we were uc'ing, figured it was better not to muddy the waters. It can be hard enough for them to accept HB. I've had 4 different docs in 3 different states and never a complaint.

Our ped is also an acupuncturist, and he was helping me to get dd#2 turned from her persistent breech position. He knew that I wanted a homebirth but we weren't sure how it was going to shake out (and we did NOT mention uc). Anyway, we took dd#2 in when she was 4 days old for pku and a general checkup. He was thrilled for us that she turned, and said she was perfect. He never asked about a midwife or anything else.

And we live in one of those areas in GA where hb is the extreme.

OT here, but do you mind me asking what part of GA? Or have we chatted recently? I know I've chatted with another GA mom recently, but can't recall her screen name.

We have to go in for the newborn screen (PKU) in our state its required within two weeks. Our ped knew we were homebirthing and had no problems with that, and we went in when she was 4 days old to get her checked out and to do the newborn screen.
