Backcarry for larger momma

I have a large chest and most back carriers I've tried land right on them and its really uncomfortable. Others crisscross and make them look strange (and its uncomfortable).

What would you suggest?

It would be especially good if its something I can sew myself.

I love the babytrekker which is adjustable, soft padded cloth, and fits all sizes.

The baby trekker looks nice but it is well beyond my budget. I can't tell from the photos but it looks like it crosses the chest which would be very uncomfortable for me having a large chest.

Unless my memory is completely shot to hell, I think when you wear it on your back the straps do not cross your chest. I agree, it is pricy. I've seen them for sale here on mdc for cheaper, and also on ebay.

Does it work for men too? Dh is a big muscle type guy about 240 lbs, do you think it would fit him?

not sure about that...theoretically anyone can use it, but i know my dh (who's a small guy) didn't like it, stuck with the sling and kelty backpack. maybe some other moms know better on that one.

I am 5'9" and about 250 lbs when not pregnant, and really, really loved my tough traveller backpack. The majority of the weight sits on your hips, not on your shoulders.

I got mine used off of ebay for about $30. I started using it when my baby was about 6 months old and used it routinely until he was about 3. When he was an infant/young toddler I could wear it for 4 hours or more at a time, but by the end I could last about an hour comfortably with it.

I like the baby trekker. It doesn't cross the chest when using it for the back carry. IME, the trekker will work for your dh, too.
I got mine used from the Trading Post for around $50. (Still pricey, but it was an advance on my Christmas presents from my mom. Maybe you have a bday or anniversary or a Thursday coming up. )

Just a thought, but you really do need to buckle the chest strap if you're doing some real hiking or duration. It keeps the pack closer and more stable.

: I know, I know...smooshed boobs just feel lovely. I scoot the strap up a bit higher on the old girls.

I'd check eBay for a Kelty or REI brand.

Check out this site. I think the Korean baby carrier (podeagi) may work for you. Even if it doesn't, the site is awesome. HTH

I have a Mei Tai (like a Kozy) and it is awesome! The Mei Tai is even better for larger women because the straps are longer. You can tie them however you want. I just got mine yesterday and my 16.5 month old has been in it at least an hour already. its www.equanimitybaby.com or for more pictures you can check out www.kozycarrier.com. The kozy carrier has a much longer wait though, I got my Mei Tai within a week. Oh and my 6'2" husband can wear it just fine and I also tried my 3 year old son on and it was good for him too.

I just bought a Tough Traveler Montana pack on ebay w/brand new rain/sun shade for $30.00.

Kelly at Kozy will make a carrier w/ extra-long straps upon request.

And w/ the asian style carriers, you can tie it back-pack style, African-style (under arms and across the chest above boobs, rather than over shoulders), or crossing the chest (yeah, not the most flattering look, especially w/ bigger ones).
