Private Waldorf School to Charter

Has anyone made the switch at their school? Charter schools finally passed in Washington state. Some of the parents at our school are interested in transforming our private Waldorf school into a charter school. Has anyone done that? Our school is about 20 years old so I am not sure how ready everyone would be to making the switch. Our tuition is equivalent to a mortgage payment so it sure would be nice to have a public school.

Not in Rhode Island

Charter schools exist in Rhode Island, BUT:

-- you can't "convert" from private to public;
-- there's a whole bunch of strings attached.

Even if the law were loosened up, though, I personally would probably be opposed; I think the effect would be a huge churn of families "sampling" and quitting because there's no tangible penalty.

Good luck, though.

We have a charter Waldorf School here -- but we started as a charter. Do you want me to see if I can put you in touch with anyone? Or would you need one that actually made the switch?

Thanks ldsapmom.

But I think at this time I am just interested in hearing if any other schools made the switch.

Looks like these guys did it...

Check out www.arizonawaldorf.com for the Desert Marigold School. You can probably find phone #s and email addresses there.

This school is still listed on the AWSNA directory site, but they describe themselves as a charter school.
