How often does your toddler pee???

It occurred to me that DS (20mos) may be peeing excessively but maybe this is normal in toddlers?

He is not potty-trained, though he is excellent at using the potty. When he is pottying or taking a bath, he urinates at least 2-5 times (in a 5-10 minute period). He has never EVER had a dry diaper -- whenever I change him, he's always wet again within minutes. It seems to me that he pees all day & all night long.

He does nurse a lot. Constantly. So maybe it's just related to that but I'm not sure. I was reading about diabetes insipidus and he fits every symptom but I might just be overreacting which I frequently do...

Sooooo yeah, how often does your toddler pee?

We moved ds into underwear & started concerted potty learning about a month ago. The first week or so we were honestly going through 20-25 pairs of underwear a day (& he was peeing on the potty too!). It was unreal & I was really discouraged that he wasn't going to get it.

But now he generally pees every 2 hours during the day & is dry the whole night through (one night he went 15 hours dry!!!).

He just need to learn how it felt & how to control it some.

My son peed quite a bit too before we started potty training. It took about a week for him to learn to hold it a little longer between pees. Now he's about every 2 hours, unless he has a lot to drink, then it's about 20-30 min after that.

I was having the same concern with my daughter. The same kind of thing started happening with her about 4 months ago. On a recent trip, there were 3 times that I was unable to offer her the potty for about an hour and got peed on through the diaper, out the diaper cover, and all over me and my carrier. Still, she would scream for water whenever she saw it and sign for it often even when she didn't see it. Juvenile diabetes runs in my family, so I was getting concerned.

We just happened to have our regular pediatrician's appointment a couple days after our return, so we talked to our pediatrician about it. She told us that in a diabetic, it is the pee that drives the thirst. She would be peeing a lot regardless of how much she drank. It's really hard to tell, though, unless you do a blood or urine test. We opted for the urine test. It was very easy and non-invasive for my toddler who can pee in the potty. Our first try, she refused to go, but we tried one more time before we left the appointment and were able to gather a urine sample. If that had failed, we would have gathered a sample at home and brought it in later. Thankfully for us, it was negative.

If you are concerned about it, I'd just give your pediatrician a call. If he pees on the potty often, it sounds like you would be able to gather a urine sample, and I'd just get one comfortably in your own home and bring it into the pediatrician. You may be able to get them to just do the test without having to have a whole special appointment. It's just a quick, cheap dipstick test, so if you're worried about it, it's probably worth putting your mind at ease or catching it early so that you can get it under control quickly.

I hope everything goes well. Let us know how it goes.
