I'm watching Birth Day (I know, I know) and the woman on the show is having a C/S at 37 weeks because she has a 4-inch ovarian cyst. The reason they gave on the show was that since they didn't know if the cyst was malignant or not, they didn't want to risk breaking it with a vaginal birth.
There are a few things I don't get about this. 1, aren't cysts pretty common? Why assume that it's likely to be malignant. Because of the size? 2, isn't there a way for them to biopsy it without having to do a C/S? 3, Why would a vaginal birth rupture it? It was sitting ABOVE the uterus. I wouldn't think it would rupture unless you're doing hard fundal pressure, which you shouldn't be doing anyway.
Is this a common reason for a C-section? This woman had had three unmedicated vaginal births previously, so it's not like they were just doing one anyway. She said that she went in and they saw the cyst and right away said C-section, no discussion. Am I missing something about cysts that would necessitate a C-section?
