Morning Verse?

I would like to begin starting our day with a moment of peace. I know a lot of people start their day with a verse or song... and DD1 would absolutely adore starting our day with a song and a candle, we just need to find ours. I can't seem to find but a few and I wasn't particularly a fan of those. Would anyone mind sharing their verse or song with us? It doesn't have to be song, we can just add a tune to any verse if it is the right one for us.

We sing the Waldorf song "Good Morning Dear Earth" and add the signs to it as well. Kristie from EarthSchooling has a video on her website if you need help with the tune. I wasn't a fan of the song until I heard her sing it.

Also, I suggest the Byrd Baylor book "The Way to Start a Day."

We light candles and incense and sit down in our "cozy room." Then, my son says, "morning has come, night is away, we rise with the sun to welcome our day." Then we sing songs and act out finger plays. At the end, he says, "I can be as small as a small small reed or I can be as tall as a tall tall tree." Then blows out the candles. He loves doing this!

beezer75 - Thanks! Maybe I will like it better after hearing it, too. I wasn't able to find the video on her website, though. I don't suppose you might be able to point me in the right direction?

enzo917 - That's great! Do you just switch up the songs a lot? Do you have any suggestions?

Anyone else? Is there a better place for me to be posting this? It isn't really directly homeschool related, I guess.

Ask and you shall receive. It took some googling but I figured it out.

Juise,

We use Oak Meadow for part of our curriculum and the verses are in there as well as the songs. Good luck and have fun!

Question for you fine folks with your morning verses. Where do you work it in to your rhythm, in relation to other 'morning' things like breakfast (and tidying up), getting dressed, bathroom stuff, etc?

I've long wanted to have this kind of peaceful start to our day. But we're all either cranky or just half-zoned out for the first hour or so of the day... they don't want to get dressed, or I just get busy with breakfast and then cleaning up and then DD makes a mess of water in the bathroom and DS is throwing a tantrum because he didn't get the eggs he wanted. That's when I can get him out of bed at all...

Do you have a specific wake-up time or does everyone wake up naturally? If so, do you wait until they're all up and about before you "do" anything? If you have a specific get-up time, how do you get the slowpoke cranky pre-teens out of bed without yelling or causing tantrums?

Then do you have this morning verse straight away, still in PJ's, bleary-eyed (DD is often grumpy and super-cuddly first thing in the morning)... corralling them from running off to play (when she's not grumpy, she's bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and off to the races from the moment she opens her eyes)... Or do you get dressed, have breakfast, brush teeth, clean up messes, etc, before the morning verse time?

Thanks for any advice. I feel that if we could have this peaceful moment it would reduce some of our morning crazies, but our mornings are just so crazy I'm not even sure where to put it!

We also do a variation of "Good Morning Dear Earth". I must admit, for some reason even 2+ months into using it we still don't have it down. I think I'll pick something new soon. We do it while lighting candles at circle time which starts our day.

We do it very casually here. My children (5 and 20 months) wake up when they want to (usually 7ish), we do not have a set wake up time. We lay around for a few minutes, make and eat breakfast and then we do circle time. Seems to work best here after they have eaten. We do it in our pajamas and usually the beginning part of our school day too. Have fun! And yes, it does set a nice and peaceful pace to our day! Good luck!
