The Flu Shot "Scare"

Thread Starter
I feel like the "scare" is in full effect now that I am pregnant. I chose to not get the flu shot this year and I didn't get it when pregnant with my son. I have gotten it when not pregnant and just nursing, but I felt better about that, especially since I have not given the flu shot to DS ever.

I keep reading posts on other message boards (not MDC) that H1N1 is "deadly" for pregnant women. I feel confident in my decision but when I read that, I have to admit, I start to get scared. I know there have been cases of pregnant women and fatalities but I have to believe there was a pre-disposition or something else there. If you stay hydrated and take care of yourself, I could get through it, right?

Don't fall prey to the propaganda........

Make sure your Vit d level is therapeutic, take care of yourself and use common sense. You'll be fine

Exactly. Eat right, take your vitamins, avoid obviously sick people and high traffic areas during "peak season." (I don't plan on hitting the mall frequently at the height of flu season for example!)

I just take a pre-natal...and the amount of Vit D is 400 IU. I guess that's not nearly enough...

Also agree on avoiding high traffic areas but unfortunately, I do have to go out holiday shopping at some point, unless I can get the bulk of it online, which I prefer to do anyway. I don't like Purell but I feel like with my decision to decline the shot, I end up having to use it after touching suspect things when I'm out and can't get to a sink.

I made it through with DS - but I didn't have kids then, now I have a 3 yo in preschool, who will be coming home with God knows what. We wash hands as soon as we get in the door, if he is cooperating. Otherwise, if he fights me to get the sink, I end up pulling out my desperate mama card and give him some incentive to want to wash his hands. It's that important.

If you can't wash ASAP then make a conscious effort to keep your hands away from your face and wash when you can. Some use of purell is okay (do the alcohol only kind...NOT the stuff with triclosan) Can you wipe your son's hands with a baby wipe or something when he doesn't want to wash immediately?

No way - it should be more like 4,000 - 5,000iu/day!

In the study, 500 women who were at least 12 weeks pregnant took either 400, 2,000, or 4,000 IU of vitamin D per day. The women who took 4,000 IU were least likely to go into labor early, give birth prematurely, or develop infections.

There are also bunches of stories out there showing that the H1N1 vaccine is deadly to fetuses

Ugh. This is what I'm most scared of. I knew a mama who contracted H1N1 and SHE was fine, but her 19week fetus died.

Despite good eating and super supplements, last year, my DS got H1N1 and was hospitalized w/ resulting pneumonia. Still, we're a no-flu-shot fam and, TBH, everytime I see an ad for flu shots this year, a prickle of fear runs down my spine... I feel so silly, bc I NEVER feel like that about vaccines...

Not sure what my point is, guess I just wanted to chime in that I'm feeling the 'scare', too.

I don't know if this helps much, but if you follow the few stories of healthy pregnant women dying from last season, they took antibiotics because of a bacterial infection as a result of the flu.

It seems like combining antibiotics while fighting this virus is extremely dangerous, so that is what is to be avoided. Antibiotics are also popped like tic-tacs in Mexico, and it was obvious to me that is why the h1n1 cases were so much more deadly there than anywhere else.

DH and I both got swine last season, and he was much sicker than I was, with known d levels much lower, too. Anyways, he took a good two and a half weeks to feel normal again, but then he had gotten sick again, and it was clear he also developed a bacterial infection during the flu. At that point, his body had worked through the virus with an immune response, so we chose to use antibiotics, and he cleared up.

Despite the inconvenience of bed rest we both still felt like it wasn't a big ordeal to work through. Much prefer the infection to the vaccine.

The overuse of Triclosan has been linked to superbugs. It's in everything from hand sanitizer to dog bowls!!
