I saw flannel sheet sets on sale at target yesterday, but passed them up because I wasn't sure. We're just used to plain cotton. Target also had those on sale yesterday, too.
I love our flannel sheets for cooler weather--I'll be putting them on the bed tomorrow. It does pill up and get kind of nubby, but they just feel softer that way. They look kind of ugly, but we're the only ones who see them, and we've had these sheets for years and they don't have holes or thin spots or anything. Flannel sheets don't get COLD like the smooth cotton ones do, so when we slide into bed in our 60 degree bedroom we aren't cringing and freezing.

I have a set from JCPenney and they're still in great shape (no pills) after almost 20 years, but, of course, what JCPenney sells now is different from 20 yrs ago. They are getting thin, but still are cozy and warm.
We have another set - origin unknown - without pills. Still thick, but they get used less often.
I love ours. We got them at Kohls during one of there major christmas sales and they have held up for two years (using them during the winter months). They are comfy and warm.
I have found that the jersey sheets act like flannel without the bulky warmness.
I like jersey sheets for early spring/late fall, cotton for summer, and flannel for winter.
In our case, winter is about 7 months. (We end up wearing coats from Oct. - (April) May). But we're moving now and the bedrooms will be in the basement, which is usually cooler than upstairs so we'll see how much more warmth we'll need.
If it matters to you, I find the flannel sheets at Target to be "cuter" than the sheets at Kohls, but they are both exceptional bargains.
I bought my daughter a set from Target for her dorm room a few years ago. After multiple washings they are softer and cozier, but still warm and the pilling is minimal. We passed them on to a friend and they are still going strong - not bad for the $9.99 we spent on them.
We got some flannel from Garnet Hill/Company Store (I think they are the same?) and they are awesome. Look for the sale stuff that brings it down to the target-type prices. We've had them for about 4 years now and I can't wait to pull them out again with the colder weather!
