Any other sneaky FSBC birthers in here?

I'll be birthing at a freestanding birth center because, while my midwife does homebirths as well, Medicaid won't cover it (even though they're the same thing as far as safety is concerned ).

Since my FSBC is basically the exact same thing as a homebirth, it's just not MY home, I pretty much stick around here since almost everything here is still relevant to me...and I really feel like it is a homebirth.

Anyone else planning a FSBC birth and sneaking around in the homebirth forum? (On that note, yes, I wish there was a FSBC forum! But this one is close enough.)

Yep! I had my DS is a FSBC because it was much cozier than the place I was renting at the time. I haven't decided if I'll do a home birth or use a FSBC for my next pregnancy. I loved the FSBC, it was so peaceful, but I spent most of my labor at home and DS was born only 2.5 hrs after I got to the birth center.

I chose to have my 2nd birth in a FSBC (first was at home). It was just so nice to go & have everything set up (no gathering supplies). We had such a wonderful experience & I was back in my own bed 5 hours after the birth. Of course, the fact that the FSBC was only about 1 mile away helped. And yes, I consider it a home birth--I just birthed in someone else's home.

Me! I'm planning to have my second in November at a FSBC. I would HB, but my home is very tiny, and I love the midwives at the Birth Center.

I doubt it's safety related, honestly. They just set things up that way and nobody has bothered fighting to change it. Medicaid here covers both. Which is why I get to have my homebirth if I make it to term. It never even occured to me until talking to people on MDC that it might not have been covered. Doesn't make sense. I planned a FSBC birth with my first (didn't happen obviously) and I have to say... Some of those places are so beautiful I almost don't want to have this baby at home.

Us, we would have a homebirth but it's not covered (ok, we could pay the money, it is in our savings, but the thought of having to transfer to the local hospital just in case - no way!), yet the FSBC is covered (and thei backup ob is "natural" and really nice)... It is a little different than a HB CPM though, since the medical board put stringent rules down: I have to get an HIV test, have to do the GD testing and the GBS swab (it is like the 5th HIV teest in 4 years, I'm so tired of having my blood drawn unnecessarily!!!). If you have GD you risk out, if you develop PIH you risk out, twins, breech all risks you out... So we are hoping for the best!
I do lurk around here though, it's good to know lots of things! We'll be out of there within no later than 6 hours after birth, and last time I was in a hospital, so I like to read here how you prepare and what to expect (they pumped me full of Mg Sulfate for no reason last time, I cannot remember most of my first hours PP).

You're so right. I'm just SO used to the assumption that FSBCs are safer (because it's a birthing facility, it MUST be safer, right? ) so in turn I'm making the assumption that the reason Medicaid in Texas doesn't cover homebirths is because they think it's safer. It's certainly likely that it's the case, but you're right that it may not be. Oops!

I'm mostly a lurker on this site, but I had a FSBC birth with my last son. It was a great experience and led me on a path to homebirth for this little one due in April 2011.

Either way... If someone was going to start fighting to get home birth covered, that's a good place to start. Mentioning safety never hurts. And I'm sure the birth center costs more. You'd think something run soley on tax payer money would want to keep cost down as much as possible. If I was running a program out of my own pocket, I'd sure push home birth and breastfeeding for that alone, even if it wasn't the healthier option. KWIM?
