Have to start an elimination diet...

Thread Starter
But I have no idea where to start. I believe my 1yo is having food allergies. I cut out dairy from both of us, but his facial rash isn't going away. So I am going to take him off solids completely, and do an elimination diet myself. But I don't know what I can eat!!

Can you help me???

ime, if your kid's a year old, he/she would have outgrown the sensitivity to things in your breastmilk. i wouldn't do the elimination myself if i were you.
it takes a while for a dairy sensitivity to go away, as well. you may want to just give that a little time.

I would post in the allergy section for more help.

My son is 5 and still allergic to dairy. You have to read ingredients on everything very carefully. I like the taste of almond milk so I drank that instead of cow milk when I was breastfeeding. Good luck!

As far as baby being sensitive to what's in your milk it seems that would depend on how severe the allergy is.
Are you trying to do the top 8? (I would also avoid corn). For me it was easier to think of what I COULD eat.
Here are some ideas:
Breakfast for me was often quinoa with honey, dried fruit and coconut milk. I think I also did lots of hashbrowns. Hemp or rice protein in smoothies.

Lunch: salads (beans or meat for protein) with oil and vinegar, or leftovers from dinners, soup

Dinner: Burrito bowl( rice, beans, beans, veg, salsa, guac) Use rice noodles for pasta dishes.

You can do this!

Because it sounds like it's just showing up now, I'd wonder if it could be something else. There is something called Fifth Disease...which produces a rash on the face. There are other things as well.

Now...if you think he's been allergic for awhile... then I'd give up dairy for two weeks and see what happens. Next would be eggs, soy, and gluten.

I too recommend Almond Milk. The Silk brand is delicious...both the plain and vanilla. (Tastes what I always assumed almond milk should taste like... not the nasty stuff I had when I first tried it 20 years ago. ) I also used coconut milk in a lot of things. Coconut Milk ice cream is divine. For butter, Earth Balance is a brand that you can find in most stores that is dairy-free.

I'm not sure where you got any of that information, but it is absolutely NOT true!! If a child is allergic/intolerant, they CAN react through breastmilk; their age has nothing to do with that. And yes, sensitivities can go away, but they don't always. If a child has obvious symptoms, I think it's important to address those, not just wait and see if it goes away. If you meant that dairy takes a while to get out of your system, that is correct- it takes about 10 days (possibly a little longer for a nursing babe), but you definitely would see improvements before that.

I agree with a pp- other common allergens for babies are soy, eggs, gluten, and corn, although really it could be anything. It's important to keep a food journal so that you can look for patterns of symptoms in relation to what you're both eating. I have info on my blog about how to do an elimination diet, food journal, symptoms, etc.

Something that helped me a lot while going through the elimination diet was to research other ethnic foods, namely asian and spanish also some mexican.

Often they don't use dairy or wheat. Soy is a concern as is corn, but it was a great place to start and not feel like I could have 'real' food.

Banana's? My best friends DS can't have bananas or avocado without a rash on his face.

Does he have any other symptoms, or is it localized?
