They should be able to detect a heart defect on the first try with a high powered US.
Just saying....
Haha-that's true. I think he wanted to rule out Down's Syndrome and any related heart or bowel issues that come with that. He mentioned those specifically, and didn't feel like he could do that with only one ultrasound. ?

I should have been more specific-him telling me the stats weren't necessarily a problem, but he didn't come into the room until I was laying down with my skirt half off my butt and paper over my belly. I wasn't comfortable, and I felt like it would have been better bed-side manner if he really wanted to give me what he felt was important information to do it at a desk or at least when I was sitting up with my clothes on.

I don't think I'm necessarily opposed to another ultrasound-I'm just not sure I see the point of it. From what he said, I didn't get the impression that the specific issues he mentioned would develop over the course of my pregnancy...

Thanks!

well, according to the very very good perinatologist who did my 20 week scan, only 80-90 percent of down's cases are detectable on u/s. apparently you can have no soft markers (esp at 20 weeks but even at birth) but still have the genetics. i've seen on previous threads that statistics are similar for heart defects.

even so, with good quad screen results there's no way i'd do an amnio. in my case i had really crappy quad screen results (1:10) but a clear u/s so i also opted for no amnio. there's nothing to downs that needs extra preparation at birth but there is a small risk of miscarriage with amnio so it wasn't worth it just to know for sure. i am going to follow up with a 2nd u/s at 32 weeks or so because poor quad screen results can mean placental deficiencies.

for what it's worth i hate the quad screen because it only causes anxiety and has this horrible rate of false positives. i only did it because i never let my OB do any testing and wanted to throw him a bone (with the caveat that he not tell me the results.) it worked out fine last pregnancy but now that the perinatologist spilled the numbers i really regret having done it.  because yeah...it does only cause worry about something that you can do nothing about.

So, a quick update.

My D&C appt is scheduled for tomorrow at 11am,
have to be at the hospital by 7am.

We went in tonight for a quick last minute ultrasound
to make sure the embryo was not viable before we abort
it tomorrow (dr gave 95% odds its not good).

Well, we are excited to say the 5% underdog WON !!!

We saw the heart beat and everything!!!
I am pregnant !!!  the due date is Sept 3 !!

Still, its not quite the time to give a huge celebration,
I am 42 years old and with that comes plenty of
testing and concerns.

In the meantime, we for sure cancelled the appt for tomorrow
and are now just playing it by ear and hoping for the best!!!

What an emotional roller coaster, we are exhaused, and I am
naseous !!

So, here I am, in a foreign country going in to get a D&C

next week.  At least in Luxembourg the medical is free and

they will put me under for it and I stay in the hospital overnite too.

*  me toooo !!!  *   Thank you everyone for your well wishes.

Now the big questions come up... which tests do I get and when

do I get them.

Yes, but you can get a CVS at 11-13 weeks that will give you actual positive or negative results for chromosomal disorders, including Down Syndrome.

What they are recommending now is the nuchal test first which is a reliable test and only involves a sonogram, then if that shows any markers, to have the CVS.  The CVS replaces the amnio in many cases and you get your results up to 4 weeks earlier.  It's very low risk if you go to someone who has performed a lot of them.

yep....but i usually don't do ANY testing so i skipped the nuchal fold sonogram (and CVS) because it wouldn't have made a difference to me and i just didn't want to spend the whole pregnancy worrying. in theory i would also skip the quad screen but i just did it to placate my OB. now i wish i hadn't done that.
