Hair loss?

Hi,

Has anyone experienced hair loss? I know that its supposed to happen after a baby, but my son is now 14 months old and I'm still losing a lot of hair. I have less hair now than before pregnancy and I'm starting to worry because I already had very thin, fine hair. My son nurses a lot and I still take prenatal, iron, omega 3, and calcium. I was on an elimination diet for over a year. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Thanks!

I have the same issue. My PP cycle returned about 3 months ago and I thought maybe it would resolve when my cycles came back but no dice. My mom has really thin hair and I terrified that I'm going to end up with the same problem. I don't have any advice, just support. Maybe we're just unlucky Bald is beautiful applies to women too, right?

After I had my son, I had hair loss too, and I ended up having a hypothyroid condition. Check with your doctor about getting some bloodwork done to rule it out. Also, it's possible your levels might still be within 'normal', but for your body, it isn't normal, so you still might benefit from the medication.

My hair was still falling out after a year. My mom said she saw something on Oprah (my mom follows the word of Oprah) about Evening Primrose Oil helping hair loss. I took it for 30 days and the hair loss stopped. Long story short, do what Oprah says.

I'm going to have to try this.

Have any of you had your Thyroid tested? Thyroid function is often effected post partum and hair loss can be a sign of hypothryoidism.

What can be done for hypothyroid during breastfeeding? I have a six month old and I'm losing a TON of hair. I've read conflicting things about supplementing with iodine during nursing. I had my levels tested, unfortunately they have to be WAY off before they show up on testing. A lot of times your thyroid can be messed up and the tests don't show it.

Hypothyroid is easy and safe to treat with medication while breastfeeding.

Levels do NOT need to be WAY off in order to detect difficulties, you just need your doctor to really listen, and order the right tests. There are many articles out there that talk about the recommendations for TSH levels being different from what doctors are being told. It is also not enough to simply test TSH either. You need to test Free T3, Free T4 as well as reverse T3. Also Thyroid antibodies. TSH levels should be between around 1 and 2.5, but each individual will feel different at different levels.

This link http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/122393-diagnosis
Although complicated to read, talks about subclinical hypothyroidism, how to detect with lab work and what to do about it.

Do yourself a favor and get copies of your labs. While your levels may be "within normal" they may be on the high/low end of normal and actually be saying something different.

**** Iodine is not necessarily the right treatment for hypothyroidism.

Well, my doctor says my thyroid is fine, and I'm sure he wouldn't listen to me if I bring papers his way stating otherwise. Is there anything I can take over the counter without a prescription, because going through my doctor is not an option...

Thanks!

I'm not sure where you live, but you might want to talk to a Naturopathic doctor.

I've had mine tested. It's fine. I'm still losing hair, although not as much of it. My son is 8 months old, though. I'm not sure if it's normal to still be losing a bit of hair. It's annoying, though.
