Cutting hair at home... any tips?

I just cut ds's hair for the first time yesterday. Although he got a lot of compliments, it wasn't what I was going for.
I've done my husbands sometimes, but I"d like to do ds's and dd's (when she gets here).

I ended up with a really blunt cut bangs when I was looking for more wispy. Dh likes a real sharp line, but I was hoping for something different for DS.

Any tips/websites for cutting hair?

I looked and looked online many years ago for tips on how to cut hair. I have three boys and keeping their hair cut costs a fortune. Lucky for me, they like it really short so I bought some clippers and started learning. My middle and youngest sons like theirs in a buzz-cut style but my oldest likes his high and tight (think Marine, lol) like his daddy. It took a while and a lot of practice but I can do it now...

You might check out the library if it's close to you. Seems like I'd seen some books at ours on cutting hair. Or, if you know someone who does hair, you may ask them to show you. I'm a very visual learner, so actually being shown helps. I would watch my husband get his done (he's very picky so I don't even attempt to do his) a few times for an idea on how to do it.

I know! I've looked online as well. Thanks for the tip to go to the library.

just to add, I was looking for something that looked like this pic. Basically then ends of the hair look really blunt now, very obviously cut.

I am thinking I need different scissors or tools as well. I've had a hair dresser people cut layers into my hair with a razor before, but unfortunetly, now ds's hair is to short to attempt it.

Off to the library!

If you really want to do this, it's worth investing in regular hair cutting scissors and a razor or whatever other tools you might want. The library is a great idea. You might also find a friendly hair dresser willing to give you some tips.

My DH bought his own kit with scissors and a razor years ago. He always cuts his own hair. He cut mine for awhile until I wanted a style he couldn't manage. He did the same for DS until DS also wanted a more styled look.

totally up for it! do you know the brand of kit you have? I do have the set for DH (got it from his dad) with clippers and scissors and combs, but I'm not ready for DS to have a clipper cut yet. I like it long.

As a disclaimer, I have done several haircuts with mixed results, lol! When I cut my own bangs, a trick I have heard is instead of combing straight down and cutting across, twist the chunk of hair you are cutting all together and then cut it so you don't get that blunt line If you want them to hang to the side, you would pull the twisted hair to that side when you cut. Good luck!

Here's a couple things I do when I cut DS's hair:

comb the section you are cutting straight up & hold it b/w 2 fingers - put your fingers right below where you want to cut

cut into the hair, not across it - point the tip of the scissors towards his head (with the hair pulled straight up) & snip that direction instead of cutting in a straight line across the hair

FTR - I've cut DS's hair a few times & have always liked the way it turns out, BUT, sometimes there are strands that are a bit longer or shorter than they should be. He is quite squirmy & I have to go fast. Here's what his hair looks like - this was after his second haircut.

I cut DS's hair. I used to take him to a kiddy salon, but he won't put up with that anymore.

The trick to soft bangs is to make little snips with the tips of the scissors upwards. That is parallel to the hair and not across it. Also, if you just make lots of little soft snips up into the bangs, it isn't too noticable if you only get half way through when your DS decides he is done and won't sit through anymore.

Sometimes, you can trim their bangs while they are sleeping if they are on their backs. Put a towel behind the head and a tissue over the face to keep hair off the bed and out of his eyes.
