If you moved your mattress to the floor... do you still use a boxspring?

We have the opportunity to buy a nearly-new king sized mattress off of a friend who doesn't like it. The friend will be keeping the box spring, since he plans on purchasing a different mattress to go on it. If we get the mattress, it'll go on the floor since we don't have a frame for it and ds is getting ready to start crawling soon. We're trying to figure out if getting a box spring is worth it/necessary (and safe to be that high off the ground with a crawling kiddo) or if we can just comfortably have the mattress on the floor. FWIW, the mattress is very firm. Any thoughts either way?

I think either way should work. I've slept on a mattress on the ground both on and off a box spring and never had any trouble either way.

Our mattress is not on the floor, but it is directly on a wooden bed frame that has no springs, and we don't have a boxspring. So I think it would be comparable to a mattress on the floor. Our mattress is fairly firm, and we think our bed is very comfortable, but we do prefer a firm bed. So my vote is that you don't need the boxspring. Also, you can always try it without boxspring for awhile, and if you hate it, get a boxspring later.

we have done both, the only thing w/o box spring it gets a little hard on the back getting up out of bed (and dh and i are young!) because it is so low.

I've done both without a comfort problem. I might not do it again, though. Can you get a low frame for it, like a futon frame? I now worry about mold, etc. We had a box spring and mattress without a bed frame (on carpet on a slab, no basement) and would up with mold growing BETWEEN the mattress and box spring -- YUCK! Now we have a bed frame.

Our mattress is on boxsprings, but not a frame. The little one's mattresses are on the floor.

We live in a very dry climate, so mold isn't really on my radar. In a different climate I would probably insist on a frame.

We ditched the boxspring when we put the mattress on the floor. Really, the only purpose of the boxspring is to support the mattress in the bed frame, to make the bed higher, and to absorb some of the pressure of you moving/shifting on the mattress. In other words - not required.

we have mattress right on the floor.
I was worried at first because I have a bad back and worried about it being too low. But I have not had a problem.
