Breastfeeding a toddler while undergoing ART?

Not sure where to post this, but figures I would here since it relates to breastfeeding a toddler.

My 15 mo DD was conceived through ART after a long period of infertility. We have several frozen embryos left and plan to try to get pregnant again with them, starting ideally in Jan/Feb. I am in no way interested in stopping BF just because we're doing ART, even though I know a lot of docs recommend it. I haven't told our RE that we're still BF and I don't plan to, which means I need to get my info re: BF and fertility and BF and medications elsewhere.

The medications I will be on for this cycle are: BCP, lupron, estrace, ASA, and progesterone. BCP and lupron for short time only. I've done some research and it seems like the only real possible effect of these medications would be on lowering my supply (the BCP and estrace in particular). Can anyone confirm this for me? I still nurse DD many times during the day (like 5-10 times), except the 3 days a week that I WOH. She also still nurses several times at night, although I am hoping to have her mostly if not all night weaned before getting pregnant again. Has anyone been on this regime of medications before while BF and can give me some words of wisdom?

Also, I know that there is a theoretical link between continuing to BF affecting one's fertility. My understanding is that the prolactin associated with BF suppresses ovulation. I have had fairly regular periods since about 7 months PP when AF first returned. Does this indicate that my prolactin is likely to be fairly low as to have minimal affect on fertility? Also, since we will be doing a frozen egg transfer and thus it doesn't matter whether I ovulate or not, is BF during treatment for me really not an issue? Like will it have any impact on my fertility given that I've had PPAF since 7 months and who cares if I ovulate (and the estrace and ASA should make my lining nice and juicy anyway)?

I would be grateful to hear from other BF mama's who've gone through ART while still BF. Thanks!

Anyone? I would really love to hear other people's stories, expertise, opinions.
If I posted this in another forum would I get more posts?

Go over to the infertility board here -- lots of mamas have discussed similar questions there.

Kid #2 was conceived with clomid/iui while nursing kid #1. Very straightforward and no issues. He continued to nurse until I weaned him a few weeks before his sis was born. It was a decision I felt fully comfortable with given the slight risks.

We tried the same thing with kid #3 but it just never happened and we moved onto IVF. Again, I felt the risk was worth it. Until I miscarried. Then I began to doubt myself. Looking past now, unemotionally, I think I did the right thing by continuing to nurse. Kids #3 &4 ended up coming later, when the big sis was 4 and I was no longer nursing.

So... I don't think the drugs are an issue especially if you are just doing a FET. If/when they/it implants will you doubt yourself if (knock wood) something goes wrong? Just something to consider. I know I never gave it a thought before hand.

Good Luck!!

I'll be keeping an eye on this board ...
We've got an appointment with the fertility clinic to start the process for number two, via FET.
DD is 20 months old, and is a nursing fiend. She would nurse all the time, if given the opportunity. I've been working on cutting her nursing over the last several months, and we're mostly nightweaned (except for when she's sick or cutting a new tooth). During the day, she nurses between 3-6 times.
I will be telling the doc that we're still nursing, and he will likely say to wean before starting. If he does, then we'll postpone the FET until May or so. If he says go for it anyway, then we'll try asap.
I'm already on BC, and have been for several months, to regulate my cycle leading up to the FET.

Thanks for the replies.

I don't think I would ever regret not weaning DD if we don't get pregnant. I think I might regret not waiting if it doesn't work. But I really really don't want to wait. I want my kids close together in age and I am SO resentful that this stupid infertility gives me such crappy choices.

I will check the infertility board, thanks for the suggestion. I am going on the assumption that since it will be a FET and my cycles have already returned (way more regular than they were before getting pregnant) and I will be on meds to get a good lining and loads of women get pregnant while BF, that the effect on my fertility is likely to be close to nothing. I'm also hoping that since she will be nightweaned by then and I WOH 3 long days a week where she gets no BM, that will help to minimize any effect on my fertility.

starling - have you noticed an effect of the BC on your milk supply at all? I haven't told the doc that I'm still BF and have no intention to. I figure most docs aren't informed about BF even to give me real information so I'm going on my own research.
