Nursing question - help, so bummed!

Hi mamas,

My 2 yo was nursing regularly for about 10 minutes three times a day. Around 17 weeks, she started only nursing for maybe a minute, though I did hear some swallowing and was able to manually express some beads on my nipple. Now, at 20 weeks, she asks for it a *LOT*, but will suck twice and stop. She shocked me this morning by staying on for like a minute. I just now manually expressed some beads on my nipple, so I know there's still something in there.

Could she be reacting to slowness of flow or taste or...? She's obviously not ready to wean and neither am I. So bummed! Is there anything I can do??

Ds was doing this for a bit. I think it was a a taste thing. It was really annoying he would nurse for a second get a taste then switch sides, do the same thing, maybe 4 times in a row before I told him no more than he would either not nurse or settle down on one side.

He seems to have gotten used to the taste now.

My daughter has been doing this as well (I'm 18 weeks). From what I've read, milk supply often decreases, but the composition and taste changes too. I think my daughter (19 months) might be responding more to that. She's also nursing less in general (I'm trying to limit her nighttime nursing) so my supply has dropped too.

That was around the time that I really dried up, had no supply. It was hard because my daughter kept asking for it and I couldn't tolerate the sensation of her nursing. We weathered through it though and I'm now 35 weeks and have abundant colostrum. She has continued to ask for it, I still have to limit her but I can at least handle a decent nursing session now. I'm so glad I stuck with it and I hope to go on to tandem nurse.
