Dumb Question re: Warranties

DH and I bought a dishwasher in Sept 09. On three separate occasions, we had to have it serviced because it was leaking. Our warranty covered those visits. The warranty is for a year, and we didn't purchase any extended warranty, (Consumer Union, among other good sources, recommends against this).

We sailed by for a few months without a problem. Now it's leaking again, and the warranty has expired. Do I still have a right (or at least an opportunity) to get the thing replaced? Or am I SOL? I'd like an idea of this before I call the manufacturer. Thanks!

I'd say your best bet is to call the manufacturer and explain the issue and then see what they say. You may have to ask for a supervisor, otherwise you'll probably get the scripted response of, "Sorry, ma'am, you didn't purchase the extended warranty!" Being you have had so many issues already, they may be willing to bend and service it one more time, or they may offer to pay 50% of the costs, etc.

It's really difficult to say.

I'd say you're SOL, the extended warranty may not have covered it either depending on wat was included in it.

I'd call, but assume you're SOL. DH got the extended warranty on our HDTV, and I was annoyed b/c why should we have to pay extra to acknowledge it's a POS? Why can't companies just stand behind their products, for pete's sake? But in the end, it worked out b/c we had the same issue with it three times in the course of a year or two. The extended warranty stated that if the same issue is encountered three times in the course of the warranty, we'd get a replacement TV. That's the benefit of the extended warranty, even though I still think that should be the case, warranty or no. Seriously, who expects to need a new dishwasher every year?

Instead of getting the extended warranties on some stuff, we use our home repair warranty. We have had problems with our dryer for almost a year now and the manufacturer sent people out like 5 times and then said they could not help me (even though it is still not working). I called the home warranty folks and they sent someone out and tomorrow, he is going to install the last part that it could possibly be. We will see how it goes from there.

I would ask the repair people which brands to buy. At least the next time around, things will hopefully be better....

When was the last time you had it serviced? We bought an LG dishwasher last September and just got an error message 2 weeks ago or so. I was pissed that our warranty was *just* up, until I remembered we didn't actually get it installed until November. After 2 hours on the phone with Home Depot, the delivery company, and LG, I got it covered because of that.

Anyway, the reason I wrote all that is that when the guy came out to replace the motor, he said we now have 90 days from date of service for the warranty, so it was essentially extended an extra 2 months or so beyond when it would have ended originally because of the repair. Is that the case for you guys by chance?
