Just a cold or something else?

Hey mamas,

I am sitting here with a horrible migraine and with worry in my heart about DS (however I tend to be a bit anxious around DS' health due to loosen my DD at birth).

Here is his symptoms and time line, any input is greatly appreciated.

September 26 (Sunday before last) DS woke up after a good nights sleep and started coughing. This was his only symptom all morning. Went down for a nap ok and woke up coughing. grumpy and with a stuffed up nose. Had a hard time going to bed that night, lots of coughing and stuffy nose woke a few times.

September 27-28 basic cold symptoms lots of nose blowing and coughing and a bit grumpy but in pretty good spirits and symptoms seemed to be improving.

Sept 29-Oct 1 pretty good still coughing a bit (productive cough) and blowing nose but way less and in a good mood, active etc.

Oct 2 woke up coughing continuous, lots of mucous and nose blowing. Pretty good spirits but was getting upset with the coughing by the end of the day. In the car that evening was really upset, crying and coughing and gagging before bed he had a shower and after his shower was walking through the living room talking tome and started coughing and then vomited (DS and I tend to vomit after coughing lots or if there is lots of phlegm)

Oct 3 again coughing all morning but no vomiting. After his nap he was coughing way less. In pretty good mood if not a bit stir crazy

Oct 4 (this past mon) was coughing on and off in the am but was coughing less in the afternoon.

Oct 5 Still coughing a bit and still blowing nose but way less. Went to sleep fine and slept great till 3 when he was really restless and wanted to nurse. I nursed him but he was still restless for about an hour when I snapped at him to settle down and go back to sleep (we co-sleep) he started to cry quietly and when I was consoling him I asked why he was crying and he said "because I'm coughing" and then it seemed like he forced a few coughs. He was not coughing at all during the night. Anyway he then started to really cough and gag and he was crying and didn't want to lie down and was hard to console, only wanted mama, said his hair hurt, screaming and crying and mucusy. We asked him if it was hard to breath and he said yes and we asked him if he wanted his puffer (he tends to get bronchiolitis/seasonally induced asthma in spring and fall) As soon as I put the mask on his face he settled down but soon after he was crying again. He never did puke but he coughed and gagged on and off. This went on for 1.5 hours with him falling asleep twice only to wake screaming when I tried to lay him down (which is very unusual for him) eventually he said his head hurt and he wouldn't/couldn't nurse lying down. We ended up giving him some Tylenol and he fell asleep shortly after that and slept maybe 3 hours then woke screaming his head still hurt and wouldn't nurse and it took about 20 mins to calm him down. Then he saw his trains and wanted to go play with them and has been happily playing with them and now watching a video and not much coughing.

Ok so if you got to the end of this your a saint. I appreciate any feedback. Do you thing the cold and the thing last night are related? I was so ready to take him to the hospital if the Tylenol didn't work.

It absolutely sounds like a cold/virus to me. However, with the lingering head congestion, vomiting and head pain, I would probably check to see if he has also developed an ear infection. My little one has had a couple of long-lasting colds that turned into severe ear infections that we could clear only with antibiotics...when the infections were gone, the other symptoms finally subsided.

Thank you so much for reading my long post and for your insight. We were able to get in to see our Dr. yesterday afternoon and yep it is an ear infection!

Oh, I'm so glad that you were able to see the doctor and get an answer. Now he's on the road to recovery! I hope he's feeling better quickly.
