Jennifer- Our library doesn't have a lot of the classics either. I have a huge list of wonderful picture books but less than half of them do they have- I am wondering if it is crazy to do ILL for a picture book? I cannot buy every book! (though I do try)
Holiztic- Welcome! I have CM's works on my wish list- I am wondering how you are finding them to read? I absolutely have adored most everything about CM education that I have read- like you though I think I tend to like the Classical approach the older we get. We didn't do anything formal until this year at 6. However, as everyone has said didn't kids need different and we will see w/ dd.
BG- The horseback lessons sound so fun, glad you are feeling better.
cmh- I am planning to do some apples today as apple butter, you could do some pumpkin butter as well. I like to do jams and such as a pancake topping. I would vote for Life Science as well- as MLW said it weaves in perfectly w/ Nature Study. Oh, and that is a good reminder about Mother Goose, I really need a better collection, maybe Christmas.
MLW- we read that fable last week! I need to remember that one next time we are on a cleaning binge
Yesterday was a good day. It was Poetry day, so I started working on memorizing a poem from Milne with them. We also did catechism, which while doing I realized we have been doing memory work there as well- 4 questions per month. So, perhaps there is more than I realize in Math- we have Yellow is the Sun, 1-2 Buckle My shoe(about 5 facts and skip counting), days of the week and months of the year- so far this year. Science we have memorized certain things like the 3 states of matter. History, nothing that I can think of other than Geography facts. We did talk about Columbus' boats but I don't think they remember.
So, we are really doing memory work aren't we- that stuff counts right? Memory work w/in a subject? Do you guys go and list that as separate memory work? Those things have all come up naturally. I like that we are learning things like the continents as we study something about each one, or countries as we read about them. How many other lit things do they memorize? I was thinking We would just memorize a new poem when this when sticks, it was pretty easy though so shouldn't take long.
Anyway, did writing yesterday and I did some copywork again. Introducing the concept of a sentence and capitals and periods. I think that is some grammar but it seemed to be organic to him doing copywork.
We are going slowly through Math, it seems some lessons are fast but others it seems to do all the prep-games and then the games for the lesson it easily takes at least 30 min. So, seems that some lessons are being broken up into 2 days. However, I guess that is good as I want to cement the concepts to him.
We took our ride to see the leaves, sadly though we left later than hoped and didn't have time for all the trails, but a short walk on the boardwalk by the spillway. We have lots more pretty leaves collected.
I meant to do art appreciation yesterday but had a hardtime finding what I wanted to go with it, then I got a call and you know how that goes. Did the other basics, reading, latin, religion- I think that is it.
Today is History, we will be studying the Wampanoag and clothing. They will be sewing some little totes I think with felt I have decided as that will be nice and easy to work with for them- plus a handi-craft to boot. Library has a big science event going on today so I am considering going to that. Tonight will be Shakespeare night- we are reading the Twelfth Night and then watching the BBC animated version. Manet for art today and I think some painting perhaps as the kids are anxious to do that again.
Man, I ramble.
I am considering dropping BFSU for Science, I said it outloud. We really enjoy our Nature Study time and I think perhaps for them it would be a more productive use to study more in-depth about whatever things they find around us. It is hard because I fall between the 2 camps on this CM and LCC are firmly in the camp of only Nature Study for these ages- BFSU contends that kids can understand much more complex thoughts and it is good to introduce it early. I don't know if it is the best use of our time though and am thinking now that as with a lot of things if we wait until a bit later to hit all those concepts it will go more smoothly and easy for them. Not to mention less work and more fun for mom and the kids.
HS buyers coop has Meet the Masters 50% right now. I was considering it to save myself the work but then I think I have all the material here just to do it myself. I waffle back and forth on how much to put together myself.
