Cholesterol and other blood test results...

Earlier this year my Chol results were bad. So my Doc put me on Zocor. Then tested my liver. My liver test came back not so good. So she switched me to Crestor. Tested me again aftr 3 months. Cholesterol levels were great. But liver results were terrible. She took me off Crestor immediately and said we will retest in 3 months.

Last Friday I went for my blood work. I found out today, my liver function is fine, but my Cholesterol is terrible!

Here is what it was:

Total - 169
HDL - 48
LDL - 87

NOW it is:

Total - 290
HDL - 55
LDL - 196

I have lost 55 pounds since Mid March with about 52 to go. Why aren't my numbers getting better without the meds?

I have other complaints so she tested my Thyroid. It came back on the low side of normal (1.48)

My Vitamin D levels are within normal but lower than the last time (was 55 now is 46).

My stomach is still big and hard. I swear I look like I am still pregnant.

I know I am insulin resistant. Any suggestions?

Some people have genetic syndromes that cause them to always have very high cholesterol, no matter how well they eat. These syndromes are usually caused by defects in the LDL receptors, which cause the liver to have difficulty in taking up LDL from the blood. Since it seems like you can't tolerate statins, you could consider using niacin, Welchol, or cholestyramine. All of these lower cholesterol but are not statins and do not affect the liver. You could also add fish oil to your diet (about 3 grams/day). You should make sure you eat a diet high in soluble fiber (about 25-30 grams/day).

If you have'nt already, you should cut out sugar, white bread, rice, pasta etc. and use brown rice, whole wheat stuff instead. Also the good fats like extra virgin olive oil. Also nuts. Do you excersise at least 5x a week? Lots of fruits and veggies.
I'm trying to lower my LDL also without meds. Good luck. Oh and also you might ask your doc about red yeast rice. You can get supplements at the healthfood store without a prescrip. but your doc has to check your blood because it acts like a statin.
