Thanks a bunch, mama!!

Do you mind sharing what you prefer about GMD over Hemp PFs?

Why do you all think some of the diaper companies rave so much about hemp when they don't appear to be a favorite among parents??
Yea, hemp can be a little touchy. Sometimes it retains odors(microfiber does, too). Like was said, it gets scratchier. You CAN bleach cotton if you need to, I wouldn't advise bleaching hemp(since I mentioned microfiber, you can bleach that, too). Velour, not that it came up in this question, also stains easily in my experience, and I prefer not to deal with high maintenance fabrics when I'm using a diaper for ease(like prefolds).

I think hemp is a great material, but not as a stand alone. It also doesn't absorb fast. So IME, if it's the material next to the skin, sometimes you get leaks before the material is saturated because it can't keep up with the flow. I use hemp doublers sometimes under a more quickly absorbing material(like cotton).

I have tried so many diapers it makes my own head spin. They were all functional in their own ways, some better than others.

I have a long skinny newborn (22in 8lbs) and am using unbleached GMD. They are working for us, but could use something a little wider and more absorbant. They defiantly don't work at night for us, he soaks them through very quickly and then leaks. I haven't used any other pre-folds.... just thought I'd let you know what I think of the GMD.

Can I suggest just getting some prefolds in the next size up instead of doublers? They probably cost about the same, maybe less.. I prefer the red-edge GMD prefolds during the day, and for night I like the brown-edge or a premium Indian prefold, with the extra folded down in front. Alternatively, I use an infant prefold as a doubler in a motherease one-size fitted.

Sure, Lunita -- I'm totally open to suggestions. I've read quite a few suggestions for using PFs as doublers. I was thinking that I may like to venture into the world of "high tech" fabrics for doublers for two reasons (feel free to critique):

Reason #1: I like the idea of having an option of having a doubler that has the "stay dry" feeling for the baby in case that's something that would help her/him during times where frequent changes weren't as easy.

Reason #2: This one may sound crazy but I had the feeling that a contoured doubler/liner would be easier to rinse poo off of. I sort of imagined using a stay dry type liner so I could have something small to rinse and squeeze out. I've never read anyone using them for this. Is this a crazy idea?

I will have plenty of PFs if I decide that they work better for me as a doubler so I've got that covered.

You're not going to get wider than GMDs. They're known for being wide.

We use a stay dry doubler like these: http://nickisdiapers.com/catalog.php?category=260 inside of a prefold for overnight or anytime I wanted extra absorbency.

Just a side comment, you don't have to get THE BEST and overwhelm yourself in the meantime. Just pick a GOOD one. We use green mountain, and I am sure there are softer dipes out there (ie organic cotton) but they work for us just fine! I guess I wasn't compelled to track down the BEST ones, just ones that came recommended, were in my price range, etc.

That said, regarding doublers, I have really liked the various doublers that we use. Some are hemp (babykicks), some fleece. Some we were given; I bought the baby kicks. I put it inside the prefold before folding the prefold to bring up between the legs.

Isn't that the truth, CookAMH!! I'm actually kind of enjoying the research so no worries about that. What's going on with me and why I'm being a bit anal is that I am not going to have much extra cash for diapers and plan on registering for diapers as gifts. I want to try to get the "best" that I can so I'm not tempted to buy anything after the baby.

That said, I know full well that one can get by with far less than the best. When my DC was born I did *no* -- like NONE -- research on CD. I just ordered the package from the diaper service, which included sized diapers and two covers. That's it and we did OK.

Gotcha The downside is the benefit of trying a couple different things on the babe then getting the stash you end up liking. BUT, I had decided on prefolds and thirsties covers (and got stocked) before DS was born and have been very happy with them, so it does work to get it all sorted. You have the benefit of CDing before so that will help you make decisions.
