unit studies are fun!

We are doing one with the local hs group. Wouldn't have thought to do this on my own. But it is proving to be quite enriching and thought-provoking for me and for dd. I wish I didn't have to push and remind her of what we need to finish before the next group meeting .... but not only the group activities, even the study we are doing at home and especially all the questions that come up - fascinating!

Probably many of you know this, but it is a revelation to me, so i just felt like sharing.

We LOVE unit studies here too! I think it really helps keep their interest in things, and I love seeing how in-depth they go with it.

thanks for asking! It is ancient history of the Indus Valley.

Lots of nice links here:

I am impressed with the BBC video game on the topic.

Cool!

I always thought unit studies seemed neat but don't quite know how to implement them. Do you just go "in depth" on a topic (if so, I guess we do that -- just isn't planned) or do you make sure that it is a cross curriculum exploration (by tying math, language, history, art, etc into the same topic)

Well this is our first unit study. We started with the BBC Video game on Indus Valley. Then I read aloud from one book on Indian History - there were 2-3 pages on this place / period. Almost every other sentence dd asked a question, and those took us in different directions.

On the website there are also worksheets you can do and that whole process makes you go "in depth" as well. In no time you are into myriad "subjects" - history of writing, economics, math (what is BCE?), social structure, architecture, arts & crafts ... no end.

We LOVE unit studies too, it's the one style of homeschooling we keep coming back to no matter what else we try!
