Does this sound like a dairy intolerance?

Hi,

I'm hoping you experienced people can help me out. I've tried KellyMom, Dr Sears and the Australian Breastfeeding Association's websites without much luck.

So, I think my 41/2 month old may have a dairy intorlerance. These are her symptoms...

- sometimes sounds a bit snuffly (no runny or blocked nose though)

- orange, liquid (occasional curds but not many) poos 2-4 times/day, sometimes mucousy, usually frothy, small threads of bright blood on 3 separate occasions

- pink area of skin extending about 2cm out from around her anus. This is always there, never gets worse, never spreads, but always present. Could this be the "red ring"?

Things that make me think she's *not* intolerant

- no screaming, ever
- no signs of tummy pain
- occasional spit-ups but no frequrnt vomiting
- sleeps well, eats well, happy most of the time
- not "gassy"

I am one week into a dairy elimination diet. I have excluded all dairy and beef but not soy. So I guess I'll find out in another couple of weeks anyway but I was hoping to get some thoughts from anyone with experience.

Does this sound like a dairy (or some other food) intolerance to you? Anything else I should be doing.

Thank you for reading.
Cheers
Kate

it does sound like a reaction to something
ds3 only spits up when he's exposed to milk and/or soy

Thanks for replying. I guess we'll just have to see what happens. I am *really* hoping it's not soy. It seems to be in absolutely everything!

fwiw, ds3 doesn't react to soy lecithin nor soy oil but that is by no means true of everyone. there ARE grey areas in the intolerance world.

It sounds like it could very well be a food intolerance. Thing is--there really is a range of intolerant. My DD had a mix of the stuff you mention, some in your "not" list but not several of the things you _do_ see. I think it's great to hunt it down now, took me til my DD was 3.5yo to make any connections.

If it's soy (or dairy or whatever) you may have leeway. Some people need to be extremely strict about every trace of the problematic foods, but some don't. Took me forever to figure out DS is intolerant of soy (I already knew about dairy, he vomited when he got some bites of ice cream as a baby) because he has quite a high tolerance--took eating soy 2x/day for a few days in a row (he was a toddler then) to see it. So once you figure out food(s) involved, you may be able to play around with the amount, or at least the trace soy/soy oil/soy lecithin issue.
