Iron-on hems?

Hi. Uh, I've never been in this forum before. I'm not crafty. At all. In fact, I'm really, really, really overtly bad at crafty stuff. I can sew on a button, and I can sort of wonkily mend a tear, but that's it. I knitted a potholder once, and it looked like something the cat puked up. I also don't particularly enjoy doing crafty stuff, though I have immense respect for those of you who do.
So my question is, I have three or four pairs of pants (jeans and cotton canvas) that need hemming. I'd normally take them somewhere to get them hemmed, but I'm in grad school and trying to save money. I don't have a sewing machine, and I'm pretty sure they would look awful if I tried to hem them by hand.
Someone suggested I try out Stitch Witchery or a similar iron-on sewing tape. Are there any really big reasons why I should avoid it?

Hi, *MamaJen* -- I was just logging on to post the exact same question! I'd love to see what others' answers are.

My situation is that I bought a bunch of sale items, knowing that they'd be a little big. But I didn't realize how long they'd be on my little one. I'm just not sure how to handle a thin cotton pant material (they're essentially yoga pants for toddlers ).

So I cannot wait to see responses to your question!
