I third (or fourth or whatever) the pedi idea or Sophie. DH and I have gotten Sophie's for all the new babies in our families and at his work in the past year. They might not be appreciated right away but we usually get big thanks about 4-6 months later I think that Amazon sells them in two packs (but separate boxes) which are cheaper than buying two individually.

baby uggs! $50 well spent, mine lived in them once he turned 10 months old.

Other than the Sears book, which I like to give people if I suspect they might have gotten other, nasty baby books, I give people what they ask for. The only "products" i tend to promote are boobs, ergo, miracle blanket, and the Nose Frida. Seriously genius, both the miracle blanket and the nose frida.

And I usually offer to lend them cloth diapers as a trail.

And I have to laugh because I wouldn't value most the things people have listed on this list.

^^^ yeah, but the whole point of the thread is that OP sil is mainstream has everything and is being referred to as a majesty. She isnt going to appreciate cloth diapers. She will appreciate something cute and different that she didnt think of, something you wouldnt get for yourself, etc.

Baby uggs all the way

OP, burts bees has a super awesome diaper cake you could knock off for a good price. How about some coupons for babysiting at odd hours of the night, that kind of thing?

I love our Sophie the Giraffe. I paid about $15 for it. Great gift!

She might appreciate a small gift set from Earth Mama Angel Baby. They have some gorgeous products that pamper both the new mother and her new baby, and the packaging is designed to appeal to both hippie mamas and designer mamas.

I think she will appreciate whatever you give her. If she has a registry, then get something along those lines but otherwise, get her something she can use. No point in giving her cloth diapers if she won't use them, you know?

That is such a cute idea! I think I'm going to steal that for future baby gifts

A handy gift is a toiletry basket for the baby...include snot sucker, sunblock, tylenol/motrin, baby gas drops, lotion, poison control information, some wipes, nipple cream, breast pads, nursing tea, butt cream, baby wash, etc. Useful and great to have around. My friend gave me this, and it was the best thing ever.

Or food. Maybe gift certificates for local places that do takeout? Or a coupon for dream dinners or equivalent?

I just went through the same scenario for my bling bling SIL, I got her a few little baby things before her 1st babe was born, and then after the birth I got her a Family Tree print from Cozy blue on etsy. Instead of having just kids names on the leaves, I had her do the baby's name on one leaf and his birthdate on the other. SIL loves it and has it hanging on the wall by his crib in the nursery.
