BF baby with of stomach pain and more...

My newborn has been exclusively breast fed from day one. He will be three weeks tomorrow. And he seems like he has an allergy.... he cries anywhere from 2-20minutes before a BM. Sometimes he just grunts and cries and there is nothing we can do to calm him... He also has a ring of very raw diaper rash right around his anus. He is cloth diapered and doesn't have diaper rash anywhere else.

I've given up all dairy for a week now and it doesn't seem to have done anything. Should I just keep trying common trouble foods??

I'm a first time mom and hate seeing my LO cry. Any suggestions??

Check out the Allergy forum. The ladies over there are real detectives when it comes to allergies and intolerances. Hope things improve!

A LOT of babies who are dairy sensitive are also soy sensitive.

Other big ones would be things like garlic and onions. Broccoli is another common one, I believe.

Also, how strictly have you given up dairy? Some react to even hidden dairy in things (whey, casein, and lots of other hidden terms that the woman in the allergy forum could list)

I've tried to give it up 100% but have had a few minor slip ups. I took a bite of my husbands CHEESEburger, the other night. Instead of getting a soy latte, I got Soy MOCHA... oops. And I found out the peanut granola bar I had eaten had a tiny amount of dairy in it. Besides that I think I've been really good. I've been eating lots of chicken, fish, fruit and salad (no cheese no dressing).

It hasn't seem to have made a difference yet though in 7 days, with only three minor silp ups. Before that I was drinking glasses of milk and having huge bowls of ice cream (I really missed Ice cream since I was GD.). So I would think that even with that much diary gone I would see something.

Also I started with dairy since I found out I couldn't handle dairy as a baby, I was fine with soy, but my mom couldn't give me any dairy till I was over two years old or else I would projectile vomit.

My fear is that wheat is his issue, and I really don't know how to eliminate wheat from your diet completely. That would be very very hard for me.

I'll post this in the allergy forum as well, I didn't even know there was one!

Sorry. I know how hard it can be. I did an elimination diet with my ds...but he outgrew it by 5 months.

A week probably isn't long enough. I'd do 2 weeks, at least, with 0 slip ups. For starters.

Dairy seems like a good candidate, but it could be something else, like eggs, or a combination of things.

Dairy usually takes about 3 weeks of strict avoidance before it's out of baby's system. It's a good place to start, but can seem really daunting. Eggs and wheat are also common allergens for little ones.

Check out the Allergy forum, and check with your local LLL. Both are great sources for information.

Well I guess I will continue on my quest to eliminate dairy for now. After doing some research it seems like EVERYTHING had dairy in it. Any suggestions on what to eat?

Also what do you think of breads/buns from restaurants???

I find the no diary thing hard as well. I was given this link: http://www.godairyfree.org/ and I heard up to 3 weeks of absolutely no dairy before it is all out of your system. I can have 1 piece of cheese daily. Man I miss my ice cream!

Just a different thought...sometimes my DS is uncomfortable before a poop, but holding him in the EC "in arms" position really helps him and calms him down. The position helps things get moving. I hold him over the BBLP (Baby Bjorn little potty) because that is what he is used to, but you could hold him over a loose prefold, toilet, etc. Also not having the poop in the diaper means no diaper rash.
