Best CD for LONG SKINNY baby.

My baby is almost three weeks old and we are doing a combo of GMD pre-folds, and kissaluv fitteds. We mostly have thirstys duo covers... NONE of our different combos fit around his skinny little legs! He's 8lbs and 22 inches long. (born 7.9 21inches)

We also have a few lil joey newborn AIO's which are the worst fit around his legs of all!!! During the day its not too bad as we just change his diaper every hour or as soon as he poops, but when we are out and about and at night we have major leaking issues... sometimes his diaper isn't even totally soaked, its just the way he was laying it runs right out of the leg holes...

What CD or Cover has the tightest fit around the legs?

newborn proraps really fit newborns & work well over prefolds and kissaluvs. They're cheap too, so they're at just the right pricepoint for that phase.

We had this exact same problem. The NB Loveybums fit really well for us, but really the best were the Clovers, w the buttonhole elastic, so you could get the perfect fit. They're in a change of ownership right now though, so you'd have to get them used.

Once he was into Smalls, Dream-Eze worked really great for us. In fact, they were my fave. But I think they're out of business. The white w black snaps didnt work for us, but the older colored style did.

I also really liked Sugar Peas AI2 at that age. Essentially, the thing to look for is side snaps, not front snaps and not Aplix. If you can get yourself a pair of snap pliers, you can even add an extra leg snap if you need to. I've been known to do this too.

You said in the other thread that you're using pfs and covers right now but he's leaking. What is he leaking? Pee or poo? Where is he leaking? Legs or waist? What fold are you using on the pfs and how are you fastening them? Brand and size of cover? How well does it fit? It should be stretching to fit snug around waist and leg or else you need a smaller size. We couldnt use NB covers until about 3 mos... We had to use preemie size (for my 8 lber!).

Have the pfs been properly prepped?

And when you're having to change everything multiple times per night, which dipe are you using?

Think thats all the questions i have right now.

Oh, and for night-time, my fave has always been Happy Hempys. They're my one exception to the no aplix rule. It sounds like you have a heavy wetter like me, and since they're pockets, you can stuff whatever you need in them (right now thats 2pfs, a Hemparoo and a Loopy-Do). They come w or wo a stay dry inner (I prefer with, both because he'll sleep longer and because wo the hemp gets scratchy over time, and i dont like that against his butt). You do have to be very careful to get it on snug around the legs (i always fasten it twice) or it'll leak. And it does need a cover (Babyology wool is my fave and some of the cheapest wool). I can't put PUL over it, or my bed is soaked by morning.

He is mostly leaking pee, almost always out the legs, though very occasionally poo (had a good blow out today that ended in a bath, it was all over!). I'm using the fold where its fanned out in the back and folded in thirds in the front, I try to get it really sung around his legs. We are using snappys.

We are using thirsties covers, we have duo size 1s, and X-Smalls. The duos fit pretty good around the legs, the x-smalls fit good around the waist.... neither fits perfect.

I was very careful to prep my pre-folds well, even completely washing out my washing machine before I prepped and before I switched to additive free soap. The first wash I added a huge pot of boiling water to, to get it really really hot. They are only getting more absorbant over time!

They get very soaked with pee and absorb very quickly, I use them for burp clothes too and they are great!

It doesn't seem to matter what we put him in at night (around 11 pm) by they time he wakes up to eat a few hours later he's leaked.... the best combo we've found is the x-small with a kissaluv fitted under it, but we only have a few of those as they are pricy, and we have 18 newborn pre folds, and 18 small pre-folds so most of the time he is in those.

His legs are just like little twigs!!! His cloths don't fit right either, anything NB size with feet is too short, but he drowns in 3month size! :P So hes going legless most of the time with his clothes!

I used green mtn diaper infant fitteds with my tall skinny guy when he was a newborn.
(we also used the green mtn diapers infant size prefold fitteds with velcro but sadly she isn't making that anymore!)

The green mtn diaper infant fitteds were a little big in the beginning but worked really well!

also, for night time you can add a soaker (is that what they are called?) oh I think it is called a doubler- basically an extra piece of fabric laid in there.

Neither Kissaluvs nor infant pfs is really up to holding you through a long nap with a heavy soaker. I didn't even bother putting a cover on him most of the time because it didn't make a difference for naps. Are you using Kissaluvs 0's? Most people don't bother using those once the cord falls off for the exact reason you're finding - they don't hold a whole lot of pee. The good news is they can be resold for a good price because they've only been used for a short amount of time.

Give up on the angel wing fold - unless you do it perfectly, it will leak, as you've found. Try Jelly Roll, it's the best one for those skinny legs, IME. Also, I have to Snappi twice - put it on, and then adjust it to make sure it's nice and tight. You may also want to try wool covers - because they absorb, which PUL does not, they can catch minor leaks. For the major leaks, you just need more absorbency in your dipe once you've resolved the leg problem. A doubler in your diaper would probably help, or you may want to use 2 pfs. Trifold one, and set it in the center of the other, then fold that one around him. For a doubler, looking at what GMD has, I'd probably go with the Sherpa 3-layer. $2 is a good price. And they'll last you to PL.

If you want to stick with PUL covers and not deal with wool, then I'd suggest trying a different brand. Imse Vimse covers are great because of the gussets, they fit all sorts of shaped kids. If your guy is the size mine was, you'll want the preemie or XS, not the NB size right now, but I'd get a NB also, just to have. Here's some good pics of the Preemie size on a preemie - you can see how the legs fit: http://www.greenmountaindiapers.com/imse_organic.htm

For that really tiny period, I believe we used a Litewrap preemie size. It's one of the cheaper covers, but the preemie size was perfect for those tiny legs. He wore that and wool until he grew into the Imse Vimse NB size around 3 mos. You can find them at GMD also.

I really think with more absorbency and a properly fitting cover, you'll resolve your problems.

HTH - oh, and sorry about the serial posting earlier. I can't scroll inside the box on my iPod.
