murcury fillings and breastfeeding

I can't just keep putting off going to the dentist. My teeth hurt and I need to get a few fillings replaced, possibly get more teeth filled. My son is three months old, much too young to wean. Will he be OK? Have any of you needed to get fillings while breastfeeding? Warnings or reassurance would be appreciated.

I had fillings while breastfeeding DD with no issues whatsoever.

I didn't catch from your post what specifically concerns you. Is it the mercury in the fillings? The anesthesia? The time spent away from your DS?

If you're getting the mercury fillings removed, I can't see how they would pose a problem or have any effect on your breastmilk. The anesthesia is localized and wears away quickly. Plenty of women undergo major surgery with general anesthesia and nurse immediately after coming out of it. (The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding has a whole section on this).

Personally, my biggest concern would be the time factor. Make sure to be the first appointment of the day so that you're not kept waiting. Although I'm no dentist and don't know the extent of the work you need done, I'd be surprised if the actual procedure lasted longer than 1-1.5 hrs. Ideally, have your DP or whoever is watching the baby be there when you finish so that you can nurse right away. Pump some milk before you go in if you want to be on the super safe side.

Obviously, I'm not a dentist, and you'll have to ask your dentist about all of this. A good, BF-friendly dentist will definitely respect your needs and be able to make this work for you. Otherwise, don't hesitate to find another provider.

Good luck!
