"Just feed him butter..." - Page 4

Your doc has got to be kidding! I would look for a different doc, too, because it seems like he can't follow a growth chart . . .

FWIW, during my pregnancy I was having trouble putting on weight and did add lots of butter, cream, and oil to foods. Really, I think that's okay in moderation. I mean, not just salted butter on everything, but intentionally boosting calorie contents of foods. You could use coconut milk, too or avocado . .

But really, your boy is right on track, so no action is needed unless you just want to boost his caloric intake.

Breastmilk, in fact, is high in saturated fat, and we'd never say it leads to bad habits, obesity or heart disease, because it doesn't.

Trans- and hydrogenated fats are good for no one, but real butter doesn't contain either of those. (Well, butter has natural trans-fats, but they're not the bad ones. It's thought that naturally-occuring trans-fats may actually be healthy.)

Sorry, I guess I'm just not explaining myself very well (pregnancy brain! ). What I mean is, it could teach a child that food is bland and tasteless without boosting it with butter. The same reason one shouldn't constantly add salt or cheese sauce or chocolate flavoured syrup to a childs' food. I know a child who had EVERYTHING flavoured in one way or another except for fast food, which already has its own set of problems. The poor thing had already developed pretty disordered eating and he was only 4 (I know, kids that age are picky, but this was SO far beyond normal, it was a psychological problem and it was causing pretty bad health problems).

Am I making any sense yet? lol Plus too much butter isn't good for anyone, period. The more butter you add, the less they consume of other foods, and the more imbalanced their nutritional intake is. Kwim?

Y'know? I mean- many of the people who I suspect frequent MDC are eating pretty helathy diets, breastfeeding - and even if you are formula feeding, you are probably aware of how much your baby needs. I am so not eloquent or concise in my thought right now! I am trying to say- in short- that I thin kit is annoying that the current paradigm is telling us to fatten up our babies when many of them are perfectly the right weight- because we are nursing them with healthy milk and slowly adding solids. rant aimed just at the general idea and not one person in particular- sorry so wordy!!!
amen, mama.

Yeah that does make sense.

Maybe only add butter to the stuff that has no flavor like chicken?

Wow! It amazes me that people actually have degrees and are recommending such outloandish things. As far as I knew cow's milk is considered to be not so great for all humans, let alone infants. Yikes. My son is in the 80th percentile for height and 25th for weight which is quite gapped, but I think as long as they gain its fine. Anyway, you obviously know what your doing! I'm sorry you had such a yucky dr visit
