12, 13...14.. hrs of sleep!

DS just turned ONE.
He STTN. sometimes, rarely, he gets up around 11pm for a wake.
And often, he is up at 6am for a wake, but after that, sleeps until... 8-something.

This has become a little too late for me.

So we tried going down later - What used to be 7pm, this week was 8pm.

He doesn't get up earlier... nothing is different. He just sleeps later!!
Today was nearly 10am, after going down before 8pm. That's nearly 14hrs of sleep..

PLUS, he sleeps one, 2hr nap in the middle of the day!

Growth spurt?

He's ONE. He's only 35% for height... maybe he is growing. For sure he's teething, but teething USED to mean he woke more often.

Is this Normal? it's SO much sleep!!

14 Hours + 2 hour nap is within the normal range of sleep for a 1 year old. Particularly a one year old who is in a growth spurt.

I suggest you get to work on any project that you can't work on with a tiny "helper".

Seems normal to me. When DS was one, he had two two-hour naps a day and slept 10 hours at night, so 14 hours.
Honestly, enjoy it while it lasts. I now have a two-year-old nap fighter!

Yes, enjoy it! DD was a very poor sleeper but most of her friends did the 2 nap things plus 10 hours at night at that age. She's just not a napper and once we cut out her naps our life has been so much better but if it's working I wouldn't mess with it!!!!!!!!!!!!

can I just say that I WISH we had your problem...

It takes DS at least an hour to fall asleep at night... and he frequently wakes up at 5:00am and this week, it's been more like 4:30... and he's up and ready to go.... Plus, he hasn't been napping on the weekends... only at day care...

He has been a booger about sleep since he was about 9 months old.

Same here - but DD was always sleeping long streches so I'm used to it and I get thrown off when there is a slight change

I would not mess with baby's needs, in terms of sleeping time (trying to go later ,etc.), it can backfire.

Enjoy it, like PP's said!

My 12 month old just moved from sleeping 4-6 hours in a 24 hour period to sleeping from about 10 pm to 9 am.

Plus a nap.

He is SO much happier now.

Count your lucky, lucky, lucky stars. Very lucky stars. Very. Did I mention how very, very, very lucky you are?

I think that at that age, 13-14 hours is ideal. And you struck the pot'o'gold, mama. Don't question... Just bask in the bragging rights that gives you while the many sleep deprived mamas here try not to cry out of frustration. It's a struggle to get 10 hours out of DS. And that includes 2 naps.

Also, what's your secret?

YES this.

DS has not STTN ever. He's 27 months old. Wow. You must get so much work done, and have sooo much energy. Wow. Enjoy while it lasts....

DD had the same schedule at 12 months and I also worried at times, at 15 months she is up for the day at 7 am sharp. Enjoy sleeping in while you can.

I agree with pp - how wonderful for you! I don't really understand why he him sleeping in later is a problem for you? Do you need to go somewhere with him?

My ds seems to need about the same amount of sleep I do which means I pretty much have ZERO time to myself in a day. I am green eyed....

DS sleeping later is NOT a problem - it was merely surprising. So many of my friends said "no matter what, they always seem to get up at the same time", so when he slept until 10... it was just odd :-)

Thanks for hearing me, and the congrats. I suppose I should consider myself lucky!!! And I feel like I'm complaining a lot that I get nothing done - the minute he's down for a nap, I'm doing school work (I'm in grad school), taking a shower, TRYING to clean something, hit the laundry, pee, etc.

But today he took a THREE hour nap. I have to admit, I felt a bit spoiled by that one and actually turned on a movie.

Ok. I'll stop gloating. It's not about that.

I'm glad to hear that his sleeping behavior is normal and healthy.

I wouldn't expect it to last, btw. But, since he only has one two hour nap per day, I am not too surprised. My 17mo ds is still on two naps + 12 1/2 hours a night, usually (sometimes less). But there was a week or two where he took longer naps and it seemed to be a phase.

Some kids just sleep ALOT! If the 7pm bedtime is easier for you and he's happier with it, move it back. My lil guy, recently turned 2, and he goes to bed usually around 7-7:30 and sleeps ALL NIGHT THROUGH to 7 or 8 am the next morning. (But he's a good boy, and will wake but is so quiet, that my husband won't get up until 8:30 or 9 and realize that the lil guy has been awake. He doesn't get home from work until midnight, so I don't complain) Anyway, with about 12 hrs of night sleep, my lil guy will still nap between 1.5-3 hours in the afternoon. So that is total 14 15hrs a day. And he's been like this for about the past year. It works for him and us

Jealous.
At 2 and a half my DD still loves to sleep and will even put herself down for a nap. She sleeps 10-11 hours at night and takes a 2-3 hour nap each day. If she misses a nap she is miserable and has a melt down in the evening. I dont think she is going to outgrow her nap anytime soon.
My DD sleeps that much and i love it because it gives me a chance to get stuff done around the house

Another jealous mama here.

DS has never slept through the night (I mean the 6 hours straight definition). Not once. It takes an hour to get him down at night. This week he's choosing to get up at 5:30 am. He is 29 months old.

Maybe you can think of some fun ways to enjoy your free time in the mornings. Organizing baby pictures/scrapbooking? Sewing? Reading? Yoga?
Sounds normal to me. At that age, my DS slept about 12-13 hours at night plus a 3-hour nap. Now he's 5 and he still sleeps for over 11 hours per night (with no nap these days).

I for one would never complain about getting too much sleep! Enjoy it, mama! You definitely are one of the lucky ones!
