Potty learning troubles/disagreements (26 months old boy) - Page 2

DS is 27 months and potty learned himself just before his 2nd birthday. We were willing to wait it out, but he decided he was ready. When he's working on other milestones we have more minor accidents (a few drops in his underwear, but his pants usually stay dry). We just put dry underwear on and remind him a few times during the day to go pee. He really has to learn how long he can wait, he knows it is not always possible to go to a toilet immediately. The funny thing is that 99% of his accidents are at home. He's more aware of it when we're out and about.
His friend (same age, girl) is still in diapers and she sits down on a potty (on DS's requests usually, he's trying to PT her, ), but she doesn't pee. When she's naked, she makes puddles, so she wears diapers in our home. She is just not ready yet, but we see progress, she holds her pee in for longer times, wakes up dry after a nap etc. She'll figure it out in her own time.

This is copied from another post I made. I did not feel like writing it all out again. Forgive me.

Quote:
~From about 15 months we let her go bare bottom for about an hour or two before or after her bath never once mentioning the potty, and then put her diaper on, and presumably she knew to hold it untill then. We did this to air out her bum to fight diaper rash. Looking back on it she never had accidents. We just thought that was normal.

~We exposed DD to the potty by talking about it and showing her the potty around 18 months. Never ever put her on it.

~At about 20 months she snuck a pee in the potty without me even knowing during one of her naked times. The very next day, I let her go naked all day and she went on the potty without prompting and had no accidents.

~A week later we introduced underwear. She had maybe 2 accidents during transition.

~A couple of weeks after that we took her out in undies instead of a diaper (which she was keeping dry and taking off to use a public restroom). She has never had an accident out of the house. <knock on wood>

~She was fully potty-trained including nights before 23 months.

Now, if you'd ask me, I'd say she potty trained over night at 21 months, because, there never was never a struggle, and once she peed in the potty she never had any accidents. However, we put in some effort from about 15 months on with the naked time, and then promoted her slowly and steadily through the steps. So I guess, you could argue it took 8 months. I would laugh, though.
I do have a theory about there being windows of oppourtunity, and that these windows will open and close and vary from child to child.

DD has had very very few accidents. She even wakes herself up to go at night when we forget to go before bed. She has never had an accident outside the home <knocks on wood>. If at any point in her 'training' she showed resistence we would have backed off and waited. So I attribute her lack of accidents to her being ready and us not pushing her. We moved slow and let her build confidence before asking her to advance to the next step. We are fortunate it happened early.

Good luck and don't stress. I was so willing to wait until DD made it easy. Even if that was 3. DD had different plans.
