Any one else struggle with utensil usage?

My dd is nearly 7 yo and has had the ABILITY to use utensils for many years now and will do so if we tell her (for like two bites) but she always goes back to using her fingers - even for things like salad and basically anything that does not REQUIRE a spoon...

Anyone else deal with this? It really drives dh crazy and it makes mealtimes less than pleasant to be on her every two bites - If she would eat appropriately at restaurants or with company and what not I would not care as much - but it's such a habit that she just loses focus and goes back to using her fingers - she is generally a very distracted and unfocused child so this is part of it....

I really thought that she'd have grown out of it by now????

Have you had her evaluated? My dd1 (9 1/2) has adhd and is very needy of sensory stimulation, easily distracted, etc. I'm wondering if your dd has a sensory need. Just a thought. I can understand how frustrating it is.

My 4.5 and 5.5 year old are definitely still reverting to fingers, but I realize that is still a little younger than your little one.

Certainly she won't be eating like this at college, right?!

This is so much like my almost 8 year old ds. Drives my dh crazy too. I'll be watching the responses. Coincidentally, we are getting him evaluated because of some of his anxiety and sensory issues.

Well - she's never been evaluated but she does have some sensory issues - I've resisted the eval b/c I always considered her within the normal range and used my own knowledge to help her meet her sensory needs... but perhaps an eval is indeed in order...

Most people don't notice my dd's behaviors, sensory issues, etc. It's more because I homeschool and what I was seeing in her schooling struggles. She's well within normal ranges for all her schooling/learning evals but we did find not just the adhd but also an auditory processing issue that was pretty big. So, it's been very helpful for us. We just went to Occupational Therapy and got some things like chewy sticks and stuff to help her sensory needs.

Yup. DD has also had the ability for years, but reverts back to that feral eating with hands thing :P She's turning 5 in November. It drives us crazy. She doesn't have sensory issues - she probably just thinks it's more convenient/fun/tasty/whatever
