canadian mamas and dads...what are you making for your Thanksgiving??

we're americans, living in canada on a work permit. we're celebrating Thanksgiving this year. It's my favorite holiday and thought it would be awesome to have it twice. my dad and his wife are coming from Michigan. On the menu I have turkey, cheesy potatoes, green bean casserole, sweet potatoe souffle, stuffing with gravy and apple crumb pie. i noticed at the grocery store today (had to buy a meat thermometer last minute) that it was not very busy at all. it surprised me a bit as in the u.s. it's very hyped up.
What do you do for Thanksgiving? What is on the menu?

We celebrate twice - Sunday with DH's family and Monday with my family - so I will give you both menus.

Today:

Turkey
Stuffing
Mashed potatoes
Carrot and rutabega
Peas
Rolls
Parsnips

Tomorrow:

Turkey
Stuffing
Roast potatoes
Broccoli
Carrot and rutabega
Rolls

The grocery store probably wasn't busy because most Canadians celebrate on the Sunday despite the fact that the holiday is actually on Monday. But, you're right, Thanksgiving is not hyped up as much here as it is in the US.

sounds amazing! thanksgiving food is so good, eh? yup, i say eh-i'm from northern mivhigan and we say it quite a bit there. i'm very much looking forward to our meal and get together. it's our first that we have prepared. i'm used to being one that just grabs the rolls and drinks to bring to others house's.

Yesterday at my mom's we had turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, peas, corn, and turnip casserole (my fave) as well as pumpkin pie and pumpkin cheesecake. Today we are having dinner at my brother's I know we are having turkey but not sure what the sides are.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Growing up on a border town I found many of us took advantage and celebrated a bit with the american Thanksgiving as it was a kickoff to the Christmas season.

My dh is also American, so do two Thanksgivings, as well. It's great. My teenage ds loves it.

That sounds really yummy.

I don't cook Thanksgiving dinner most years, because my mom cooks for the whole family. I bring one side dish, and the dessert. So, everything on the table will be:

Turkey
Ham
Stuffing
Gravy
Cranberry sauce
Roast potatoes and sweet potatoes
Mashed potatoes
Potato casserole
Boiled turnip and carrot (that's what we call it, but on reading the other posts, I'm reminded that it's actually rutabagas, not turnips)
Brussels sprouts
Raw veggie tray (probably - she doesn't always do one, but usually does)
Dessert is pumpkin and pecan pies with whipped cream

It's a lot of potatoes. The mashed and roasted ones are traditional in our family. The potato casserole is dh's grandma's recipe, and I originally made it because he really likes it...but so do my siblings, stepdad and several other family members...including me!

I was in the store on Friday and it was crazy busy. A lot of people buy their food a day or two ahead, and quite a few people do their meal on the Sunday night, instead of the Monday.

Local chicken, 'cause I thought we'd be at our in-laws, so I didn't buy a turkey. Then dh got a cold and they wouldn't let us come out. Then dd was really sad about not having turkey, so I broke down and bought one from Toronto. Oh, well, everything else is local...

Cranberry sauce
Gravy
Turkey and chicken
Mashed potatoes
Apple muffins
Apple sauce
Roast squash soup
Chocolate chip cookies
Homemade bread

Cranberry sauce is my absolute favourite food in the world. I eat it with everything.

We had our meal on Sunday too, so things were bought a couple days ahead. We did a potluck at my grandparents house, and actually my mom and my aunt each cooked a turkey on Saturday night.

Also, since we usually buy a frozen turkey we'll buy it a week or two ahead of time, or whenever they're on special. You need a good amount of time to thaw a frozen turkey!

We had:
Turkey
Gravy
Dressing
Mashed potatoes
Sweet potato mash
Spaghetti Squash
Turnip casserole
Green peas
Nappa Cabbage salad/slaw
Homemade buns (made by me!)
Jelly salad
Marshmallow salad (with coconut and mandarin orange)
Pumpkin Pie
Cherry Pie

We had:

Roast chicken with stuffing
Stewed pork
Crabs
Shrimps
Mashed potatoes with gravy
Vegetarian's delight (mix of various tofu and mushrooms)
Baked sweet potatoes
Shredded tofu and noodles
Apple pie

A couple other things I couldn't remember now. This was only for 6 people. You can probably tell there are many special dietary requirements there. We're not exactly 100% Canadian. I usually make no less than 8 different dishes with any family get together.
