Serious Bathtub Help Needed

My bathtub looks so embarrassingly nasty! I rent my home, and it's obvious the tub has been resurfaced or painted or something, because it is PEELING. There's horrible soapscum buildup, and dirt stains or discoloration, and the more I try to clean it, the worse it looks. I've used every cleaner I can find, from natural cleaners to the horrible toxic stuff, and it remains discolored and the harder I scrub, the worse it peels. I'm embarrassed to talk to the landlord because I feel like it's my fault for letting it get this bad. I think it just needs replaced but I don't see the landlord being too happy about doing that. But it's getting so bad I can't hardly stand to use it! Any ideas on what to do?

We have an old clawfoot that the finish is going on. My sil used a mr. clean magic eraser on it (not something I would normally buy) & I was shocked to see it white!

try wetting the tub with vinegar, dust with baking soda, wet again with vinegar so it foams. Let set a little while and sprinkle salt then scrub. You can use a scrubber and it will help. My bathtub was beyond gross and this got it sparkling white again!
