Best fats for developing toddler.

Our toddler is in the process of weaning and we have found out that he is allergic to cow's milk - not lactose intolerant but allergic to anything with cow's milk in it.

This includes yogurt, ice cream, cheese etc.

My question is, what foods/supplements will ensure that he gets all his recommended daily intake of fats to steadily and healthily gain weight as a developing toddler?

Thanks

I am sure others will have good suggestions but avocado would be a good place to start.

I often add a tsp of flax or olive oil to dd's rice or quinoa. I give her coconut milk (unsweetened out of a can) to dip her fruit or veggies in, and she loves curry or soups made with it too. Avocado diced up or mashed up, plain or w/ salsa for easy guac. And peanut or almond butter, on toast or waffles or apples....

ETA: when I was pg my midwife told me to eat coconut milk yogurt instead of soy b/c of the much higher fat content. You see coconut milk in cartons at the store now too (at least where I live) and it's higher in fat than soy or rice.

Thank you red + lulu for your wonderful suggestions.

I have organic coconut cream concentrate ( which is supposed to have a higher fat content )... but he is not liking it I guess it's time to get creative and sneak it in.

Maybe if I consume it he will acquire a taste for it via breast milk ( I guess this means I'll be packing back on the few pounds lost )

No worries though coconut cream tastes great to me and there is always & .

Which do you guys think is better for baby fish oil or flax oil?

I'm researching but nothing beats feedback from real mommies.

I say neither. Fish oil, besides being an animal, carries a very real risk of contaminants like mercury and other pollutants which concentrate in fats (ie, the oil). Plus, um, gross!

Flax is an inferior source of omega-3s because it only contains ALA which must then be converted to DHA in the body. The conversion rate for adults is very low (like 4%) and for children is almost nonexistent.

A perfect solution is algal DHA, which is non-animal but in the usable form (DHA). You can find it in various forms online. My favorite is here

try making ice pops with it. dd's favorite is sweet potato and coconut. just steam the sweet pots, and puree in a blender with the coconut, pour into pop molds. you can do it with any fruit-veg combo...

i thought of another one, too: i make a vegan ranch dressing that uses veganaise (i use the grapeseed oil one) and a bit of soymilk. dd loves to dip in it, and it's definitely fattening.

avocados, nut butters, coconut milk, oils (olive, safflower, sunflower, coconut), and nuts and seeds.
