using utensils/pencils???

Someone who knows or has the same experience...please tell me what is the link between ASD and my nearly 8 year old not being able to hold a fork/spoon/pencil/scissors/toothbrush etc properly? He has OT to work on these and other issues and although we have a lot of positive gains from nearly 3 years of therapy we have NO gains in his ability to use his hands. Is this a neurological issue? It is heartbreaking watching him try to eat or get dressed or play with small legos etc. What is it with the hands? Why the stimming with hands? And the inability in a very bright and smart child to use his hands. He has good handwriting and loves to draw and write but the way he holds the pencils is really painful to watch. I can't get any answers from anyone and researching gives me nothing.....just wondering if any other moms here have the same concerns and maybe found a connection.

I'm astonished that these were skills he had as a 3 yo that were regressed and continue to regress.

There is a link between ASD and fine motor issues, but I don't know why. Some things are more extreme in some kids than in others. My DD (who has asperger's) has some fine motor issues, but not as extreme as your son. Her sensory issues, however, and almost debilitating.
