"the flu kills"

A person I work with asked me if we were going to give a flu shot to our14. Month old. I said " no way ". He said " oh you're one of those. The flu used to kill kids before the vaccine. I know a decent amount but can you give me the simple reasons why the vaccine is not one I should be giving a 14 monnth old. thanks

AHAHAHA!

As far as I know, no one in my family in the past 3 generations at least, possibly 5, have died from the flu. Of course, we've all also been at least SOMEWHAT healthy and can fight the flu when we actually get it. which, me, my brother, my mom, my grandma, my grandpa, my stepdad and my aunts and uncles have not gotten it for as far back as I can remember.

I have to say, I'm just not afraid of the flu.

The flu still sometimes kills people even with the vaccine. And?

I would just shrug and say, "My children's medical care is really none of your business." Then change the subject. You don't owe him an explanation or defense.

Yeah, I hear flu shots will make my child give unsolicited parenting advice when she grows up. Yuck!

I guess the flu can kill and probably did more before they INVENTED IV fluids and antibiotics and SANITATION

Say, "Wow, really? Analysis of studies shows it's no better than a placebo, so why bother?"

Are there ANY studies which show a benefit to the flu vaccine in babies/young toddlers?

Well, if you read through the Cochrane review, they state it's pretty slim pickings...

There might be some recent ones out there as this review goes to 2007. But it doesn't seem, based on the above, to be widely studied.
