What good plain math book and science projects do you use?

I'm looking for a good plain math book that does not use manipulatives. We used math -u-see for a couple of years but we didn't use the manipulatives all that much. I suppose I could just buy the book/dvd and keep using it like we were but I want to see if there's anything better out there. I'm also looking for maybe a book or a good place to buy science experiments/projects. I prefer doing stuff like that than reading a science book.

Singapore does not come with manipulatives. In the HIG it suggests using your own as many children need manipulatives but the actual TB does not reference them.

For science, I really like "Janice VanCleave's Chemistry for Every Kid". She has a whole series but this is the only one I've used.

MCP Math is very basic. Also the Marshall Cavendish Singapore Math series so far does not seem big on manipulatives - it appears to do things with pictures on paper instead.

Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding has activities recommended for most of the sections of the book. I have also seen kids' science encyclopedias that show experiments that can be done to demonstrate various principles.

Also if you are interested in watching DVDs, our kids love the Bill Nye DVDs. I get them from the library. Many of them show experiments that can be done.

We've started Developing Critical Thinking through Science from the Critical Thinking Co. and really like it. It's basic but thorough & will (supposedly) give a good science foundation. I wanted something that included simple experiments with explanations....not just "creating a hover craft" or "making a volcano explode." They have a handful of other science books, too!

ETA - for math we are loving christian light education. we've used it for almost 3 grades now. it's from a christian publisher obviously, but it seriously rocks.

I am not sure how old your child is, but I'll answer anyway.
For math DS1 loves Teaching Textbooks. Just enough instruction for him to get it and no extra manipulatives for him to deal with. I love that there is instant feedback for him.

Science he loves doing Supercharged Science. Tons of fun experiments that get him super excited about the topic. Aurora is so awesome.

Are you doing just the free stuff or the e-science?

Elizawill: The CLE math looks simple and is reasonably priced. Just what I need! Thanks

E-science. So there are "themed" experiments and a lesson plan to go along with the study. DS1 loves it.

Though we are also doing Noeo Chem III and studding Story of Science as well, we are going to drop Aurora's site. But I definitely am going to start it up again when we are done with our book studies.
