Interesting Behavior in Baby?

I have been noticing what I consider to be interesting/unusual behavior in one of my 8 month-old twins. Although not yet crawling, he has been the most active baby out of his 3 siblings and has what seems to me to be unusually well-developed fine motor skills. His little hands are very nimble, and his dexterity is pretty impressive. He has been able to turn pages in books, pick up small things, etc., for some time now. Whenever you give him a toy, he looks at it, turns it all around with those nimble little fingers, and you can just tell that he is really analyzing it. He seems to really "get" how things work and is able to turn shapes around to get them to fit, etc. Yesterday, we noticed that he used one toy to get another toy to move closer. He also imitates speech sounds, imitates us, says "Hi," and is always working to get his siblings' attention. He will flail his little arms and kick when his brothers come within his view and will shout out to get their attention. He has been a very alert baby, and I sometimes wonder how much he really naps. When I put him down for a nap, I sort of feel like I have to give him something to look at/play with, b/c he sort of looks at me like, "What am I supposed to do now?" He just always seems to be looking for something to do and does not seem to want to let his mind rest.

He also has checklists/routines that he goes through. For example, after I nurse him, he will routinely: look for the nursing pad and examine it if he finds it; check for earrings and necklaces and work to get earrings out if he sees them; check for the remote control and hold it up and chew on it if he finds it. He seems to be thinking, "Now that I am done eating, it's time to do these other things..." Also seems to have a good sense of humor - very expressive, laughs, works to make others laugh, etc.

I guess I'm not really asking anything specific here, but I did wonder whether anyone else had a similar experience? If so, did it turn out to be indicative of advanced development in later years? (Obviously, I know that it's too early to tell whether he is really gifted.) I usually read this forum b/c of my 6 y/o, but he didn't really exhibit the same characteristics as a baby.

Must go now b/c he is trying to work the computer and just erased a line of text!

I think you'd better enjoy this time before he's truly mobile. That all does sound pretty advanced and pretty VS. It will be interesting to see his developmental patterns.

He sounds really far ahead to me! My husband was labeled as gifted as a child and he had a passion for finding out how things work. At four years old he took a screwdriver to the wall sockets and started taking them apart. So, yes enjoy the pre-mobility time! (Fortunately, he never put both hands in at the same time to create a full circuit- which is why he is still here.)

Thanks for the replies -- I am petrified of the quickly-approaching mobility stage!!! So it does seem unusual to you, too? I was wondering b/c besides my own kids, I haven't really been around a ton of babies for any significant length of time.

Last night, his 3 yr-old brother was having a meltdown/tantrum w/ some shouting and squawks, and the baby studied him for a while and then started to imitate him - shout for shout, squawk for squawk...At least this had the desireable effect of the 3 year-old stopping to take notice after a while...
