Registry...when you don't want typical stuff from typical stores?

Baby will be here in February. I honestly don't really care about the typical stuff at Target, Babies R Us, etc. Sure there's *some* stuff there I could use (some more nursing pads, storage bags...can't really think of much else!), but what I REALLY want to list are things like cloth diapers, a waterproof sling, a pump, the expensive but chemical free baby wash I get, etc... Anyone have any suggestions? Is there some web site that you can put "wish list/registry" items on from different web sites?

It's kind of important to me to put things like cloth diapers, etc., that I NEED because I'm really in a jam here (ex dp turned out to be an emotionally abusive alcoholic and kicked me out, probably won't be paying for anything and I won't count on it), and I don't know how many people will actually get me anything...so I can't put up too many wants so much as I have to put up NEEDS. It's more important that I get cloth diapers so my kid doesn't have to go diaperless than to put up some cutsey baby clothes when I still have all of DS's old clothes and a couple friends with girls who can give me their old clothes depending on which this baby turns out to be.

You can make a baby registry on Amazon.

I'm the same way. I just found out that our church is planning to give me a shower, even though this is our 3rd baby. They give one for every baby, no matter what birth order he/she is, and I totally appreciate the blessing, but I just don't need all the 'typical' stuff. I made a registry at Abby's Lane, more to help me remember what I still need to get, so I may include that? I'm not sure.

Go to http://myregistry.com/ you can make a registry for anything you want and pull things from whatever website you want. Its great. Friends of ours did it for their baby shower and they were able to get such cool gifts that you can't find in those other stores.

I use amazon, b/c people will actually find it on their own (my family tends to use the wishlists on there) and you can find all kinds of stuff on amazon, and then they have a universal registry button so you can add ANYTHING from any web site. I even link to things like the city rec dept and make a note saying, how about money for lessons for DD? Just watch out for sellers on amazon with RANDOM prices-- some stuff is a bit higher, some WAY higher, than it should be. Mostly it's fantastic, though. Last time with our first we made a registry on some random registry site and got almost NOTHING, and nothing we NEEDED, off of it. People just want to give cute blankets and outfits and toys, it seems. That night we went online and ordered everything we NEEDED (nursing pillow, diapers, changing pad, etc). This time the amazon list was mostly for me to keep track of what we needed, and also we took our bags of coins to coinstar and got an amazon gift card with no percentage paid to coinstar, and got a bunch of stuff we needed

I did Target and then KellysCloset.com

There are things I need from Target, like sheets and blankets and car seats. I also did toddler things...like bath toys and shoes and a step stool. Can't hurt, right?

And then Kelly's Closet I have all the cloth diaper stuff I want; whether people actually buy from there or not, I don't know. But at least I think between sheets, blankets, and cloth diapers, people will get the general gist of what I am wanting. I did not register for a single toy, and since we don't know if we having a boy or girl, so far I have not been inundated with newborn clothes; instead people have given more practical things like books and cash!

We were in the same boat as you! We registered on amazon.com.

I second the myregistry.com vote. You can add the "add to registry" link on your favorites and then browse and add whatever you like really easily. It's tons of fun

diapers.com carries some cloth diapers and other "crunchy" items.

Thanks! I think I'll go with the myregistry.com suggestion. But any web sites that have good stuff with good prices that I can add from would be awesome!

I had my baby shower this weekend. Like you, I wanted cloth diapers, a sling, and some other things not found at big box stores. So I registered at Target and nickisdiapers.com (which is actually located near where I live). So what happened? Only 1 (out of 30 guests) purchased something from Nickis. Less than half got me things from Target, and the rest got me other things. I'm not complaining though... everyone was really generous and we love our gifts. I just spent a lot of time stressing over making a registry. If your guests are not online shoppers, then you might want to have a registry at a brick-and-mortar store in addition to an online one.

I registered for regular baby stuff at Target (including items from both in-store and online) and cloth diapers at Kellyscloset. I just had 2 showers last weekend - one at work and one friends/family.

I'm glad that I started my diaper stash months ago on my own (diaperswappers!) cause only one person bought of the kellyscloset registry. Some people bought off the target registry, but most didn't. Mostly I got baby clothes and blankets, which is actually okay with me because this is my first baby and I didn't have anything. Also, I purposely didn't buy any clothes on my own cause I anticipated that most gifts would be clothes. Of course, all the blankets are cute fluffy things so I bought my own swaddling blankets (also from diaperswappers).

I did get some of the things I really wanted as well including a moby wrap and the city mini stroller I'd been obsessed with for months. I did get one big-ticket item I wanted from the target registry that included a gift receipt. I was able to find that exact same item on craigslist for less than half the cost, so we paid cash for the used item and are returning the new one for store credit and using it for necessities. I am really thankful for all my gifts and have been lucky to find much of what I still needed on craigslist, diaperswappers, or secondhand stores.

Anyhow, don't stress too much about the registry. Be ready with suggestions if people ask - you'll probably have some friends/family who "get" it and will ask what you need. Do be prepared for lots of clothes and cutesy things - I don't think there's much you can do about it. Target does have breast pumps, moby wraps, reusable nursing pads, nursing bras, california baby products. I registered for some of that stuff, but didn't get any of it other than the moby, which was actually purchased off my kellyscloset registry.

I prefer Amazon Universal Registry over Myregistry.

Same experience here. I registered at Toys R Us for a few things & then www.bynature.ca for the rest. Only a very close friend & my MIL actually bought anything on line. I think a lot of ppl prefer to go to the store & look for themselves. I had the hardest time trying to convince ppl that what I NEEDED most was the cloth diapers. In the end I kept the Toys R Us stuff that I needed & returned any extras that I didn't & used the $$ to buy the diapers on my own. Impolite? maybe but I was greatful for the support & it got me my diapers in the end either way.

FWIW, babiesrus.com DOES have cloth diapers because I am registering for the bumgenius ones through them. And Walmart is now selling Meyers at our local store.
