Newborn startup recommendations?

I didn't start regularly CDing DS until he was 4+ months old so I have medium and large AIOs, but nothing for a newborn. For this one I'd like to start with prefolds and covers...nice and simple. How many of what do you recommend? Any specific types or brands? How many of what sizes of each thing? DS was 8lb10oz when he was born so I'm expecting this baby to be between 8 and 10 lbs. I've looked online and it's just too confusing for my pregnancy brain right now. I just want to lay it all out.

Also, any good web sites to buy from? I'll be looking on Diaper Swappers but I'm going to list them on my registry as well (using a universal registry so I can add from any web site).

i bought all my stuff, and i do prefolds and wool covers, at green mountain diapers. i like all the info and they have great customer service. the maximum for shipping, even for a huge order of prefolds is $10 i think.

my little guy wore their orange-edged prefolds til he was about 10 lbs, then i switched to the yellow, but i could have before. he wore the orange from under 5 lbs, so i think the yellow could work for a larger newborn no problem. he's wearing the yellow edge still at almost 16 lbs and will be for awhile.

i love the imse vimse velcro wool covers they sell. my guy started fitting into them by the time he was 10 lbs, but he is a slimmer build (legs and waist) than many babies. we have and do very well with 3 of these covers, they are poo-splosion proof (so far, heh), respond really well to scrubbing and sunning, and dry super-quick. supposedly you can put them in the wash, but i haven't tried that. i figure they'll last longer washed by hand, and i wash dipes on hot. he's still in the small size.

btw, if you're afraid of wool, these things are amazing. boiled wool, almost never any dampness to feel unless it's time to lanolize, which you only need to do about once a month with these covers. they are very thin, so low profile over the pre-fold.

eta, check out their wet bags too .

We used infant sized Indian prefolds from Cotton Babies from birth. DD was 7lb 13oz, and they were a touch bulky at birth but not huge. I did have to fold over the front for awhile. My favorite newborn covers were ProRaps, though she outgrew those quickly (by 10lbs) then used small Thirsties. This time we're getting a few Thirsties Duos size 1, which should fit from birth and adjust up until 18lbs or so.

I second GMD - there is "new to cloth info" page that lays out several ways to start with cloth (http://www.greenmountaindiapers.com/newmom.htm) that is helpful. That said if prefolds are the way to go then the only real choice next is the covers. There is exposed vs. hidden PUL - personally I chose covers that have the hidden PUL (Imse Vimse Organic; Nikky breathable poly and cotton covers; little caboose bamboo and weehuggers has a combo exposed in the wetzone with bamboo on outer edges that touch baby) - but many many people like the exposed PUL (thirsties, bummis, prowraps). If you put in "newborn" on this search forum and the diaperswappers.com diaper chatter q & a forum you will find many posts addressing these issues that may be helpful. I also found the reviews at diaperpin.com helpful as I narrowed things down. Truthfully, I am lucky and have a few diaper stores in the area and when I went to look at and feel the products that is what sold me in the direction I went. So, since you have time, you may want to consider buying a few diffrent covers and seeing what you think if you don't have a store nearby. Sorry for the long response, I am awaiting my NB and I know how I struggled with this issue as well! BTW 6-8 covers is what has been consistently suggested - I went with 8.
