Stinky, gassy bf baby!

Why is my EBF 10wk-er so gassy? And his toots stink! Like burnt potatoes

He is not much for burping, but we do try after every feeding, and he will usually give at least a tiny belch.

Could it be my diet? I'm vegetarian but have cut out all soy and barely ever eat nuts. We don't eat too much wheat, but I guess I could give that a try.

He's been consistently stinky and gassy for at least a couple of weeks, seemingly regardless of what I'm eating.

Could it just be lots of seasonal produce making my milk gassy for him?

He usually has a pretty good latch; sometimes I hear a little clicking, but then we always detach and try again til we get it right.

He's been very complain-y about it and really cries, so it's not just a little toot here and there---it's causing him pain

We got gripe water which seems to help him eliminate the gas, but what's causing it in the first place?

Any advice?

have you tried chamomile tea in a bottle or soft spout sippy? we gave my dd about 2 oz of chamomile tea at that age and although it isn't an isntant fix it did seem to help her temperament and make her a little less miserabl over the course of the next few hours.

I raelly have no idea about what causes it though......are either you or her dad prone to gassiness? not to be funny, but my SO is always farting, and lo and behold, dd came out farting and stinking up entire rooms at 2 days old. in fact the other day he said to me, "you know what a close bond dd and I have, when one of us lets out a stnky fart so does the other one....we're just so in tune with each other." trust a man to find THAT emotionally rewarding....

My son has been a smelly, gassy baby from the beginning...and very infrequent b.m.'s. My genius pediatrician suggested adding some 'heat' to my diet. She said that spicy food should keep things moving through his gut, leaving less time for bacteria to have a stink party with it. Like magic, the stinks have gone away and he's much more regular!

Probiotics often help. You can get good infant ones.

How are the poops?

Could it be a foremilk/hindmilk issue? Do you have a really fast let - down? Does baby fall asleep - or get bored and pull off after only a few minutes at the breast? Does baby take both sides at every feeding? Some babies - who are getting more foremilk - less hindmilk typically are very gassy and often poops are greenish and frothy. Basically foremilk is sweet and watery and meant to sooth baby and get them interested in sucking, the hindmilk is at the end - is richer, creamier, designed to fill baby up for a long time. Some moms just produce SO MUCH baby only gets the foremilk and is often fussy, gassy, etc....
If it sounds familiar - it can be easily remedied by nursing on only one side per nursing session - this will help your breasts not over-produce, and will ensure baby gets the rich hindmilk.
