Okay, so have an allergy to shellfish. It's never been confirmed via blood test or anything, but I have a pretty consistent reaction to it. I first had a reaction around age two from eating shrimp. I got a rash over my entire body. My mom gave me Benadryl and I was fine.
I would have bites of shellfish growing up (tasting other people's meals) but never ate an entire meal like I had when I was two. I didn't seem to have any reactions that I remember. My parents thought I had "grown out of it" but I was always too scared to have more than a bite of shellfish, so larger quantities were never tested.
When I was pregnant (which, for the record, ALL of my food sensitivities seemed to become a million times worse during pregnancy. I could not touch dairy when normally I can have yogurt and hard cheeses) I had soup at a thai restaurant. It was the appetizer that they serve to everyone. It smelled a little fish-like to me but I took a few bites. And my lips swelled up and my tongue tingled like crazy. I stopped eating it and it went away after a few hours. I never asked what was in it, I was a little embarassed.
So, a few weeks ago my mom went to New Orleans and had some gumbo, and had the same reaction (lips swelling, tongue tingleing, just feeling generally crappy after eating it). She has no history of a shellfish allergy. In fact she loves mussles! She is now avoiding shellfish. She is very paranoid of allergies as she's had some weird ones in the past (like to Aleve...not sure what was in it but she got a rash all over and had trouble breathing). I really wasn't worried about this at all until it happened to my mom too.
I'm kind of worried for my daughter. Should I order a blood test from her ped? Last time I mentioned it to her ped she said we could trial shellfish in her office which seemed weird to me. Better to not have a reaction at all, right?
My daughter was sensitive to corn in my breastmilk when she was little (did the TED to find that out, what a trip) but seems fine on it now. No eczema or weird poops or congestedness or rashes or anything like that.
She will be 15 months on the 25th. Right now we are avoiding nuts, seeds, berries, and shellfish (most of those just until she is two, I'm really only really worried about the shellfish). She eats everything else, and seems fine on it.
Advice? I know allergies can go from mild to anaphylactic pretty quickly. I'd rather be on top of this.
