When do your DS/DD start brushing their teeth on their own? - Page 2

Ds1's dentist saifd that they can't effectively brush their teeth on their own until they can write in cursive.

I taught ds to brush each section on each surface to the count of 8. After he's done, I go over each surface, but for a shorter amount of time.

eta- just read the thread to see that the cursive thing was already mentioned. I also should add that ds has had numerous cavities, despite brushing twice a day, not drinking juice, and having limited candy

We go to Children's Hospital Boston for the dentist and all of them there say that kids can't do a good job brushing until age 9. And even then, the parent should check the teeth to make sure they look clean.

This is the 3rd dentist we've been to and the others said similar (although one said age 12.)

DD was 5 in August and took over around then. I double check the evening brush and do a once over, but she's pretty good about it.

haven't read all the replies, but our ped dentist says parent should brush and floss child's teeth as long as possible to ensure it's done properly. my dh doesn't ever floss his own teeth and his own brushing looks suspect, so i try to make sure it's me brushing the kids.
