long road trip, looking for tips!

hi mamas, we are going to be taking an 8-hr road trip (that's the time before stops) in two weeks. my little guy will just have turned 7 months, and as of now, HATES the car seat. on any trip longer than 30 minutes, he slowly loses it. even with one of us sitting next to him, he eventually is just all out crying and can't be comforted.

so, we are worried!

our plan is to leave as soon as he goes down for the night and drive straight there. he transfers well and sleeps well in the car at night coming home from grandparents' houses, so we're hoping he will for a longer time.

the trip back may be done other than in the night though...

any tips or advice about entertaining him, keeping him distracted, helping him relax??? what's worked for you?

We've done several road trips and Ive found that as she's getting older, its eaiser. She really likes the radio being on. We usually bring little things for her to play with, some solids for her to try and eat (watermelon slices, teething crackers, ect). At nighttime she usually just sleeps. We have a sleep sheep and a turtle that we take in the car with us:

We have a car screamer and in one of the threads about it someone suggested feeding the baby breastmilk from a bottle to quiet him (since BFing from the next seat over is not practical although I know some have tried!). We tried this once and it did work ! ....but only as long as the bottle lasted. On a long trip I would definitely go armed with several bottles full and a thermos of hot water to warm them and give that a go. If he;s at all sleepy that may help him sleep, or get back to sleep if he awakens. GL!

I had a thread like this a few months ago and the trip turned out to be so much better then I thought it would, so try not to stress too much, though I know that's hard. I was stressing for weeks before we left

I went to the consignment store, and got DS some new toys that I kept until we left, so that he had some new things to play with. That kept him entertained for a while. He also likes having music on, and I did sit next to him for most of the trip. I would just recommend stopping and getting out and stretching for a little while if he starts to get fussy. Oh, I also brought some cheerios for him, that was something new also.

I hope it goes well and that he sleeps most of the way

Do you have him in a bucket seat or convertible one? Some kids are more xomfortable in the car after being moved to a convertible.
