New to CD and I hate microfiber/synthetic stuff

I'm struggling with what to purchase (I have a LONG time to decide.. just in the research stage now!).

One thing that has turned me off from some otherwise great diapers is that they have microfiber/microterry/microfleece next to baby's skin. I can't STAND the first two--I have texture issues. I can handle microfleece. However, it just seems like it's better to have natural fibers next to baby's skin? (Plus I've heard synthetic fibers may have more of a "stink" issue?) I am ok with PUL waterproof covers.. they're on the outside. My biggest concern is what's next to baby's skin.

I've looked at Swaddlebees Econappis--are these a good choice? Also, BumGenius Elemental (organic cotton rather than the micro-whatever the regular BumGenius have)??

Any recommendations? I am not 100% opposed to synthetic fibers on principal.. like I said, it's more of a texture issue. But I'd love to find some great diapers. Unfortunately the Swaddlebees Econappis are close to $30 and the bG Elementals are $25. This has me revisiting the idea of prefolds.

Help a new CD mama out? Oh--I used Thirsties Fab Fitteds on my son, but I know the insides were some kind of microfiber (I think)... loved the velour on the OUTside though (ha), but I only CD'd him for a while when he was around 2.

im like you I personally dont like synthetics and neither do my kids bumms since it tends to give them rashes. My kids have horribly sensitive skin. They are all cotton boys.

I used (and will use) prefolds for that reason alone. There are a couple of manuf. that use prefold fabric to make them into fitted or contours GMD has a newer line they are trying out as well as proraps have an AIO that has prefold fabric as the inside of the diaper. Liked the proraps AIO as the material is super soft but had the convenience of an AIO.

I also like motherease (they do have a neglible amt of poly in the binding due to wicking) but the bulk is cotton. I have the one size but they now how several lines which are made differently and do have some synthetics in them so you have to watch that but they are very upfront with the comp. of the diapers.

I would be interested in others responses as well to other all cotton diapers.

GMD only sell 100% cotton dipes, so you might look there. They have a few different fitteds, as well as their prefolds and falts and lots of covers.

Thank you!!! I actually JUST saw (after I posted) that GMD has made prefolds into "fitteds" with snaps and I am in LOVE! They are so inexpensive for fitteds and I am THRILLED that they are 100% cotton. (Seriously this is like the most exciting news to me LOL.)

I didn't know about Proraps making some AIOs with prefold "guts." I'll have to search for those.

And I TOTALLY forgot that two of my friends gave me their leftover/extra Motherease (they each gave me one) when I was at one of their houses and my son had an accident in his underwear (we were just starting potty training). I still have those two! Threw them in a box to give to my sis, never got around to it, and here I am pregnant again HA! I don't mind a bit of polyester in the binding, I can understand that.

Thank you so much!!

Cotton flats + wool covers work wonders. I don't use them but a lot of people love them.

We used cotton prefolds and flats with wool covers (and a couple PUL for times when pee would pressure-wick through wool, like when strapped into a car seat) and loved the combination.

I admit to being a little intimidated by both flat diapers and wool (and wool is pricey.. for good reason, but pricey nonetheless). I will most likely be using PUL covers. If we're just lounging at home, I may go coverless (I'll try that and see how that works out LOL).

Just thought I would throw it out there. We are using the new gro-via all in ones, they are competely organic cotton on the inside and I adore them, they wash and dry really well and are so super easy, plus compared to the bum genius they are a bit cheaper.

I too love natural fibers. I'm a huge PF and wool junkie.

BUT, I have noticed that DS is much more fussy if he's wet in a PF, which is like once/hour. However, if I have him in a fleece-lined pocket diap, like Diaper Change, he will be MUCH less irritable. I now put him in them at night for this reason, and it seems to make him sleep better.

If interested in fitteds you should also check out tinkletraps.com - you can purchase premade fitteds or request a variety of styles with a custom order from her prefolds (little lions) or you could send in your own (for example GMD organic prefolds) and whatever kind of closure you want, none, aplix, snaps, side snaps etc.

I didn't realize how much I hated the synthetic microfiber until we used them for a while... and yeah, they definitely hold detergent residue and then smell. I had to strip them like every wash after using them less than a year.

My favorite that I found after that was bamboo!! SOOOOOO soft, and naturally antimicrobial and absorbent. I found a few WAHM bamboo dipes on eBay, and one store locally that carried them.

The organic Bum Genius look pretty nice too- I've felt them, but never used them (we had the regular Bum Genius- which I liked, except for that synthetic fabric inside.)

I have a friend who make diapers out of natural fibers and sells on Hyena Cart. She makes really cute stuff and sells them for around $15 a piece. She also makes wool and fleece soakers for around $20. You could get a great stash for a great price and she is super easy to work with. I think her shop is called New Skool cloth diapers. If you are interested, I can get you a link.

We started with prefolds and PUL covers, and moved to wool after pooping reduced to once a day or so. Wool is incredibly cheap (even cheaper than the PUL brands we were buying) if you make it yourself out of secondhand sweaters. I know it sounds intimidating to lots of folks, but they really are very straightforward to make. We only used flats when we were traveling and needed the fastest drying diapers.

Thanks! I had looked at Grovia, and I noticed that the inserts were organic cotton and contoured/gussetted. Maybe I'll try a couple of those. I hadn't known anyone who used them (til now!). Thank you for the recommendation!

Hmmm perhaps I should consider something like that for night time. Could I put a fleece liner on top of the prefold (by on top of, I mean inside, next to baby's skin) for night time??

Thanks, Dena. I just looked at her shop and I saw a newborn (7-15 lbs) organic (I think) bamboo... velour inside, for $12.95. Great price for what looks to be a great diaper! I bookmarked her shop.

Probably would work fine.

My favorite way to diaper is flats and wool covers. Sherpa inserts if I need more absorbency than one flat but two flats is more than I need. I love me some organic 100% cotton sherpa... SO soft.

this is one site that sells them but it gives you an idea of their makeup. The poly is all in the "cover" portion of the diaper. My boys are super sensitive to poly (among a 1000 things) and these work just fine because it dosent really touch the skin.

Beth, she is really amazing. Her name is Sierra and she makes these because she loves cloth and wants everyone to be able to do it. If you contact her, she will make you exactly what you want..and her stuff is lovely, I love putting her diapers on my girls.
